Brienne, Akkerman District, Bessarabian Village, South Russia. Founded in 1816. One of the original Bessarabian Lutheran colonies.

In 1892 August Wilhelm Adolf (son) was able to arrange for his parents and three of his siblings; Frederika, William and Andreas Andrew, to come to the United States. They settled near Denver when they first arrived and worked in the smelters. Later they moved to the settlement and worked as blacksmiths.

Christian lived to be 85 years, 8 months and 19 days. ; Christian Adolf and Friederike (Steeg) Adolf were born and raised inBrienne, Bessarabia, South Russia. They were married in 1859.Friederike was born on February 19, 1842. They had three sons and twodaughters. In 1889 they left Russia and came to the United States withsons, August who married Catherina Richter, and Andrew who marriedMargaret Schlichenmayer, and daughters Friederike who married FrankKramer, and Caroline who died at an early age (16) after arriving inAmerica. Their son Wilhelm (William) Adolf and wife Margaret (Buchfink)Adolf and children remained in Brinne.
The family settled on what was then barren plain about 18 milesnorthwest of Burlington, Colorado, in what is known as the German(Russian) Settlement. Together with other early settlers, that colony ofindustrious frugal saving people have made that portion of Kit CarsonCounty one of the most beautiful spots in Eastern Colorado. What wasonce the home of the wild beastsand the red man has now become an oasisof fertility, dotted here and there with happy homes, big barns, finechurches and well kept stock of all kinds. Thanks to their energy andperseverance and cultured home surroundings, that portion of Kit CarsonCounty more nearly resembles the typical eastern farm neighborhood thanalmost any other part of this county which extends about60 miles eastand west and for a distance of 36 miles in width. It is these earlypioneers who have redeemed Eastern Colorado from its pristine waste.

Freiderike and Christian Adolf lived for 65 years together ascompanion and helpmate. Friederike died at her home north of Bethune,Colorado on February 5, 1924 at the ripe age of 81years 11 months and 16days.
Christian Adolf was featured on the May 10, 1919 edition of a Lincoln,Nebraska weekly farm paper. This is a photo of Christian Adolf shellingcorn with a hand corn shelter. He was born in1839 and died on August 3,1925 and was a blacksmith by trade.

They lived just east of Hope Congregational Church. The Adolfs werelife long members of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Christian was partiallyblind when he was 80 and they went to live with son William and familywho cared for them til their death.
