An 1898 biographical sketch written while Hugh was still alive, TheHistory of the Catholic Church in Indiana, Volume II, edited andcompiled by Col. Charles Blanchard, publisher A. W. Bowen & Co,Logansport, Indiana, 1898 stated the following: HUGH REYNOLDS, a respected Catholic resident of St. Patrick's parish,Indianapolis, was born in Roscommon Ireland, in the year 1824. Whenan infant he was bereft by death of his father, and when eight yearsof age his mother brought her family to America. She settled inHamilton, Ohio, where three of her seven children were called fromearth to join their father in the regions above, and where, about theyear 1856, her own death took place, having been, in the meantime,most filially cared for by our subject and her three other survivingchildren. Hugh Reynolds was united in marriage, September 11, 1851, with MissEllen Hangley, who was likewise early bereft of her parents and when achild came to America with her brothers and sisters, and grew towomanhood in Hamilton, Ohio. From Hamilton Mr. and Mrs. Reynoldsremoved to Cambridge City, Ind., where they resided a few years, andthen, in 1874, came to Indianapolis, where they still reside,respected by all who know them. To their marriage have been born fivesons and four daughters--Thomas, Beatrice, Owen C., Mary B., GeorgeJ., John F., Catherine and Gertrude. The family have their home at No.1292 Hoyt avenue, where they are respected as being among the earnestand active workers in the interests of St. Patrick's parish. Mr.Reynolds learned the trade of cooper, which he followed through life,and for many years was foreman in the shops of the Standard Oilcompany.
