My Aunt Lois has always been so good to us. I suppose in my teenageyears I did lose some caring for all the adults in my life. I realizedthis at 23 when my Grandmother (Lillian McCord Guhl) passed away. Ilove my Aunt and wonder how much she and my mother may have been thesame. I wonder if my mother sounded like her as Aunt Lois sounds likeNanny! I wish we could have been closer. I feel that now (1996-1997),we are getting closer. We didn't see their family except for Holidays.Bob likes my Aunt and Uncle very much. They did get to visit Arizonaabout 3 years ago. I wish they would come back again. Lois M Follmer interviewed Aunt Lois McMahon on March 25, 2009 viatelephone. 1. Favorite Color - red 2. Most amazing invention in your life? Television, first TV in theneighborhood was a few doors down, we used to stand on their porchwaiting to be invited in to see a child’s programs; Howdy Doody,Westerns from 3-5pm, small screen about 12” and black and white. Whenit became color, it was funny as the top was blue, middle was orangeand the bottom was green. It looked so artificial. (My uncle Tom wasgood at being the first to have things like the bubbling lights onChristmas trees. He worked for Camden Condenser.) 3. Favorite meal? Filet mignon 4. Who do you most want to be like and why? I try to live like Jesusdid 5. Who inspired you most and why? My parents, gave me the gift ofChristianity 6. Favorite place you’ve been? Florida, went many times to DisneyWorld, Sea World, Cypress Gardens, love the weather, scenery andflowers. I was happy in Florida. After 25 years we had our secondhoneymoon there. 7. Where would you go if all expenses were paid? Bermuda 8. Favorite heirloom/family treasure? Love my engagement ring. (Nannyswedding ring had peach blossoms on it.) 9. Do you collect anything? no 10. I had a favoritechildhood book and I still have it, I scribbled in it. Black andwhite illustrations, has no cover on it. (Herbie loved “CuriousGeorge”) 13. Jobs you have had? Favorite? Worked for the Bell Telephone for 10years from 1954 – 1964, got married and retired, became a fulltimemother. I had several different positions; my favorite was when I wasa dispatcher for the installers to go to the homes. I then teletypedthe results to center city. I was also a time sheet clerk keepingrecords of all the employees’ hours. Foreman’s clerk, under 7 foremenwho had installers. They would write in what they did, how long ittook and I recorded it. Like if it took 1 hour to install and phoneand the guy recorded 3, the foreman would go out the next day to seewhy. I had about 5 different positions in 10 year. Salary started at$40/week 8am-5pm $1/hour; by retirement, I was up to $85/week. I got apromotion after 5 years, left the 26 Cheltenham Ave office and went to256 West Washington Lane (garage for their trucks, I worked upstairs, they no longer rent there). All phones were black, $3 extra for colorphone; phone came with straight cords if you wanted a spring cord itwas an extra $1. If you wanted a jack, it costs $7/piece. Repair jobswere free! 14. Favorite saying/Bible verse? Isaiah 2:52 – let your heart not betroubled nor let it be afraid for I am with you even until the ends ofthe earth. My minister gave that to me when I was baptized. He gaveeach person a verse that started with the first letter of their name.I was 13 when I got baptized, at Second Baptist Church of Germantown. They had 2 fires, one when I was a baby, the second after I gotmarried. The lid wasvery, very sharp around the edges, dangerous, worn, very, very thin Icut myself on it. Must have been well over 100 years old. I have thetool Pop-pop sharpened the knives with. He would sharpen the knivesbefore slicing turkey. I think I was born to be a wife and mother. My greatest accomplishmentis my two children. Herb has been wonderful to me. I thank God everynight for my parents, my sister, my grandmother, and all my family. My father said when he was in the hospital, he died and saw a brightlight and would not be afraid of death after his experience. Had my gallbladder removed in 2000, had acute attack – thought theycould do laproscope but when I woke up they had to do it the old way.Nanny messed with hers for years and years and years and got very sickboth before and after surgery. Pop-pop had to hire a nurse to lookafter her. When I was 10-12, the female house call Dr said shewouldn’t come out again, she had to have it out. Nanny was passing alot of bile, a bag was hooked on the side of the bed and it would fillwith bile.
