Obituary
David Press, 60, of Everett, died February 16, 2003, peacefully at home, with his family gathered around him.
He was born January 17, 1943 in Nashville, TN, the sonof Bernard and Eloise Press. David was surrounded by music and musicians throughout his childhood, and began studying piano before most children learn to read.His father, Bernie Press, was a well-known trombonist, arranger and big band leader. After playing violin and trumpet in school orchestras, David discovered his true love - the string bass. The family moved to Edmonds when Bernie began arranging music for the Seattle World's Fair Band. David graduated from Edmonds High School in 1961, and began playing professionally in 1962 in Reno and Las Vegas. He returned to Seattle and began working the club scene, and in the late '70sreturned to school, studying at Edmonds Community College and Cornish College ofthe Arts. Dave also played for six years aboard various cruise ships around theworld. Over the past two years, Dave has fulfilled his dream of bringing jazz to Everett by presenting 12 concerts at the Monte Cristo Hotel, and thought of his participation in the P.E.A.C.E. concert at the historic Everett Theatre in November, 2002, as being one of the highlights of his career. David loved teaching,and believed that music is life's great gift. So very many of his piano, voice,bass and theory students became close and lasting friends.
David is survivedby his adoring wife, Susan of Everett; his brother, Mark and his wife Nancy Press of Edmonds; his three children, son, Eric and his wife Julie Press of Auburn;daughters, Alicia Press of Everett and Mara and her husband Roosevelt Avery ofLake Stevens; three granddaughters, Olivia, Brittany and Ashley Press; stepson,Matthew and his wife Nora Haider of Granite Falls; stepdaughter, Rachel and herhusband Ivan Jones of Aurora, CO; two stepgrandsons, Andy and Ben Haider; two stepgranddaughters, Kamaria and Alyra Jones; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Robert and Betty Shatzka of Everett; sister-in-law, Marjorie Shatzka of Arlington; brother-in-law, Bobby and his wife Vicki Shatzka of Grand Junction, CO; numerousother loving family members, and an amazing number of friends whose lives had been touched by David's wit, warmth and wisdom.
He was preceded in death by hisfather, Bernard Press, and his mother, Eloise Sloan Press.
We love and missyou, David, and know that you and your magical music are forever with us.
A special thanks to Dr. Joshua Shaw, Dr. Kimberly Marquis, and Dr. Paul Knoll for their compassion and support of David, to the staff of Providence Colby Campus, 7th floor, for their excellent care, and to Hospice nurses, Connie and Wendy, forthe respect, kindness and help that they gave to David and his family.
A Memorial Service will be held at a future date at David's beloved Monte Cristo Hotel Ballroom, where he made so many miracles happen.
