William de Montacute, or Montagu, succeeded his brother to the barony. The 2nd son, he was the son of Richard de Montacute and Alice (?). He married Isabel (?). He paid £6-1s-6d for his estates in the County of Somerset as scutage for the King's (Richard's) ransom in 1194/95 in 6 Richard I. He was sheriff of Dorset and Somerset between 1205 and 1209 in 6-9 John, England. He was one of the great barons of that reign who stood up for the liberties of their country, and being found in arms with the rebellious barons against King John, he was stripped of all his lands in Counties of Somerset and Dorset, which were seized by the King and given to Ralph de Ralegh, in 1205/6 in 7 John.
