David was born in Fulda, Hesse Cassel, Conferdation of Germany,in 1832. He is the second oldest of children born to his mother, Barbary, but has two older half brothers and a half sister. David immigrated as the youngest Resch at age one to America in the Spring of 1833. He arrived with his family Port of Baltimore sometime between July and September of 1833.(probably in July)

The family traveled inland to Wayne Township near the city of Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio in September 1833. He was raised there on the family's farm. Notes detail at the age of 6, upon entering school, his teacher wrote his name as DavidJoseph Rash. He would use this name for the rest of his life.

In 1853, at age 21, David migrated to Mt. Sterling, in Brown County, Illinois with parents, brothers and sisters. They traveled by wagon train to Mount Sterling via Chicago, a trip of around 700 miles.

Brown County is a farming community, located in the central-western bulge of Illinois.

David married Margaret Crummy in 1861 and had seven children. He purchared ownership of the original farm from his mother in 1863 and actively farmed until mid 1890s. David and Margaret also accept responsibity of raising Henry and Elizabeth Geisler(nephew and niece) after the early death of their parents.

Eventually, their farm passes on to their children, he and Margaret take up residence in Mount Sterling proper. David dies of dropsey in 1905 and is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Mount Sterling. Margaret lives on until 1916.
