Jakob Schmitt, born in Nünschweiler during the Napoleonic occupation of Zweibrücken, left for the United States early 1833 or 1832 and arrived in New Orleans where he married Maria Katharina Baas, widow of Heinrich Wolf. The two then traveled with the Baas family to Cincinatti, Ohio and departed for Jefferson County, Pennsylvania around 1834 or 1835.
Family records suggested that they married in 1832, but this is impossible seeing that Katharina was married to another man and was still living in Bavaria at this time. The most probably occurrence is that after her husband's death (or possible abandonment), Jakob and Katharina were married in 1833 after traveling to the United States with the Adam Baas family of Winzeln.
Geburt
His birth and baptism are not given in the Nünschweiler Kirchenbuchen, as the books only record baptisms up to the beginning of 1810 and pick up around 1813 or 1814. It is possible that baptisms during these years were recorded in other books due to the Napoleonic rule of Zweibrücken and Pirmasens.
Tod
Jakob Schmitt died in a falling accident suffered during the final weeks of April. He died in the early morning of May 1st after having written a very brief will a few days before.
Beisetzung
By the time the cemetery was to be removed, no stone was found for Jakob, although family lore has it that he was interred near a tree on the corner of the old church lot.
