Eugene C. Brockman
Eugene C. BROCKMAN, 72, pioneer resident of Lake Manitou's east shore, died this morning at 3:30 o'clock. He suffered from heart trouble, had been in ill health for the last two years and a patient at Woodlawn hospital since June 19.
Gene and his brother, Billy [BROCKMAN], came to the community in 1909, from St. Louis, Mo., when they erected a large cement block home south of the old Fairview hotel. This was one of the earliest homes built in that section. The two brothers opened a boat landing and for years rented boats to fishermen and resorters.
Through the years their business expanded. They stored boats during the winter months and maintained them. They built piers and docks, putting them in for cattage owners in the spring and taking them out in the fall.
They also became a rental agency for cottages on the east side and employed a crew of men each summer to take care of lake properties, for which they mowed lawns, did electrical work, painted buildings, installed and maintained water works. They were known to all residents along the lake for many years. After William passed away, Gene supervised the work until he went to the hospital.
Before coming to Lake Manitou the Brockmans were on the stage and played in theatres all over the country with the Charley HOLDEN troupe. Holden maintained a residence at the lake. Gene and his sister, Mrs. Lula May TOUEY, deceased, were actors while Billy was electrician and stage property manager. They retired from the theatrical business when they moved here.
Mr. Brockman was born April 2, 1886, at St. Louis, Mo., the son of William and Emma (JAMES) BROCKMAN. He was a member of the St. Joseph's church of Rochester.
He is survived by a niece, Mrs. Arthur W. WEAVER, R.R. 1, Rochester; a great-nephew, Arthur L. WEAVER, Jr., and a great-niece, Mrs. Joseph E. MEISER, Jr.
Rites will be held at the church Monday at 9 a.m. with Father George LANNING officiating. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery here. Friends may call at the Zimmerman Brothers funeral home.
