Lot is located between Thomas Bull and Jo hn Arnold on south side of "road from George Steele's to the south mead ow and Giles Smith to Wm. Gibbons". Also on the south side of Little Rive r. From "Genealogical and Family History of the State of CT" ed. by Cutter, C lement, Hart, et al, p. 728, Vol. 3, 1911 . Gives lineage from Alfred t he Great, King of England to Richard RIN 191 and daughter Phillis RIN 18 8. Born at High Ongar, Essex, England and baptized 30 Oct 1580. Sold his l ands in Norton Mandeville in Ongar in 1629. Embarked Aug 1631 with wife and 5 childr en on ship "Lion". Landed at Boston and settled first in Charlestown. Adm itted as freeman on 11 Jun 1635. In Oct 1635 became one of first settle rs of Hartford, CT. Lost cattle on the way. One of the original proprieto rs of Hartford. Will dated 22 Apr 1640 and proved 27 Jan 1642 with that of his wife who died so on after he died in 1640. Son Robert, born 1629, married Hepzibah Bascomb in 1662. Fr om p. 26 Richard Lyman 1617-1662, son of Richard Lyman RIN 191 and Sarah O sborn, came with his parents on ship Lyon. Married to Sarah RIN 192. Made journey to Hartford, CT in 1635. From "The Pioneers of Massachussets" by Charles H. Pope, 1981, p.296. Richard Lyman c ame to Roxbury (9) 1631 and brought children Phillis, Richard, Sarah and J ohn. Removed to CT. Freeman 11 Jul 1633. Wife Sarah, daughter Phillis R IN 188 married William Hills. He died in 1640. From"The Colonial History of Hartford" by Wm. DeLoss Love, 1914. From p. 3 2, became settles of Hartford in 1636 soon after arrival from England. Fr om p. 124 received 30 proportions of land from the division by a town meet ing on 3 Jan 1639/40. From p. 156, an example of the average planter is t he estate of Lyman when he died in 1641. He had suffered the loss of his c attle at the time of his removal to Hartford. In 1641 he had 4 cattle, 3 g oats, 8 hogs and had planted that year 5 acres of Indian corn, 3 roo ds of peas and barley, an acre each of summer wheat, oats, and meslin (a m ixture of wheat and rye). This shows the progress after 5 years of labo r. From p. 322, early pioneer homes were log, about 20-30 feet long wi th a chimney at one end and a thatched roof. They were built to last unt il a frame building could be erected. Will of Lyman in 1641 suggests he li ved in such a house as he names no rooms and he had on hand "squared tymbe r, planke, and board" necessary for a framed house. Will dated 22 Apr 1640. I nventory dated 6 Sep 1641 valued over L83. Nine children listed with dat es adn spouses. Married to Sarah ____ RIN 192, no date or place given. First child Phill is bapt. High Ongar in 1611. Family came to New England in Nov 1631 in t he Lion with John Eliot and his party and settled in Roxbury, Massachussets. Freem an of Massachussets Bay on 11 Jun 1633. Eliot wrote that he was "an ancient christi an but weake, yet after some time of tryal and quickening he joyned to t he church". He removed to CT toward the winter and his cattle were lo st in driving and some never found again. The winter caused a sickness a nd he died in 1640. In 1639, the Court Rolls of the manor of Pasfield Hal l, High Ongar shows that Richard Lyman had surrendered the copyhold lan ds of the manor on 19 Sep 1631 just before he left for New England. AT HIGH ONGAR) RICHARD LYMAN was the son of Henry and Phillis (SCOTT) LYMAN of Saxon bloo d. He was b. in High Ongar, Essex Co., England, and bap. 30th Oct. 158 0. In 1631, he sailed from Bristol, England, in the ship "Lion," with h is entire family, landing in Boston, 4th Nov. of the same year. He settl ed first in Charlestown where he became a freeman, and 1635 removed to Con necticut where he became one of the original proptietors of Hartford. H is death occurred in 1640. m. Sarah OSBORNE, dau. of Roger OSBORNE of Hals tead, Kent Co., England. He immigrated with his wife and chi ldren: Phillis, Richard, Sarah, John (Sep 1623-), and Robert (Sep 1629- ). Some years after arrival he joined the Roxbury church. He may have mov ed to Cambridge, since he was part of the 1635 settlement of Hartford, C T, which was founded by Cambridge residents. In 1639, he won court damag es against an Indian who had burned Richard's hedge. Richard died in Hartf ord, probably died in May, Jun, or early Jul 1640: he wrote his final wi ll 22 April 1640, and "wydowe Lymans" was noted by the witnesses on 24 Ju ly 1640. in 1635, w He was part of the group that settled the Connectic ut River and appears in Hartford, CT records in 1640. Canney at www.Ancestry.c om World Tree - Database: 'canney': In 1629 Richard Lyman sold to one John Gower messuages, a garden, orcha rd and divers lands arable; at the parish of Ongar, of Essex and ab out the middle of August 1681 he embarked with his wife and children in t he ship "Lion", William Pierce, master, for New England. They left from t he port of Bristol. Richard Lyman first became a settler in Charlestown, Massachussets and with his wi fe united with the church in what is now called Roxbury, under the pastor al care of Eliot, the apostle to the Indians. He became a freeman at the G eneral court, 11 Jun 1635 and on the 15th of Oct 1635 took his depart ure with his family from Charlestown through the wilderness to Connecticu t. The object was to form settlements at Windsor, Hartford and Wethersfiel d. He was one of the first settlers at Hartford. Richard's portion of land obtained from the Indians was average with the r est of the proprietors. The will of Richard Lyman, the first on record at Hartford, is dated 22 Ap ril 1640. The inventory of his personal property was made 6 of Sep 1 640. In the interval between these dates, he must have died at the a ge of 60 years. In 1629 he so ld to John Gower lands and orchards and a garden in Norton Mandevill e, in the parish of Ongar, and in August, 1631, embarked with his wife a nd five children in the ship "Lion," William Pierce, master, for New Englan d. In the ship, which sailed from Bristol, were Martha Winthrop, third wi fe of Governor Winthrop, the governor's eldest son and his family, also Eliot, the celebrated Apostle to the Indians. They land ed at Boston, and Richard Lyman settled first at Charlestown, and with h is wife united with the church of which Eliot was pastor. He was admitt ed a freeman Jun 11, 1635, and in Oct of the same year, joining a par ty of about a hundred persons, went to Connecticut and became one of the f irst settlers of Hartford. The journey was beset by many dangers, and he l ost many of his cattle on the way. He was one of the original proprieto rs of Hartford in 1636, receiving thirty parts of the purchase from the In dians. His house was on the south side of what is now Buckingham street, t he fifth lot from Main street, west of the South Church and bounded appare ntly on Wadsworth street either on the east or west. His will was dated Ap ril 22, 1640, and proved Jan 27, 1642, together with that of his wif e, who died soon after he did. His name is inscribed on a stone column in the rear of Center Church of Hartford, erec ted in memory of the first settlers of the city. He married Sarah Osborn e, daughter of Roger Osborne, of Halstead, in Kent, England.
