They bought a farm east of the old Mid­dleton homestead, five miles east of Elkhart. It was situated on the south bank of the St. Joe River just east of where Pine Creek empties into the river and west of what is known as the six-span bridge. Uncle Mike built a large rambling house set back among the forest trees and lived and died on this farm. He was always a favorite uncle; was hospitable, liked young people and created a con­genial atmosphere for visitors. When the Civil War soldiers returned, especially those from the Andersonville Prison, he did much to make them comfortable. He was a stout man and became such a progressive farmer that his farm was a showplace for people from miles around. He was the first farmer in Elkhart County to use machinery as labor saving devices.
