Marjorie Smeland, 92, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and precious friend, to all that knew her, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2009, surrounded by her family.
Marg, as she loved to be called, was born to James and Marjorie Bailey, in Hinsdale, Illinois, on November 5, 1916. The family later moved to the Everett, WA, area where she and her sister spent their childhood years. Marg attended Washington Elementary School. Until recently she and her dear friends from school, who were known as the Silverbells, met to continue their friendships. She also was a 1934 graduate of Everett High School. She later married Claude Councilman and they had three children, Claudia, Gary and David. She worked for Mannings Bakery and later became the head girl in the bakery for Safeway stores. She eventually moved to the Mobile Home Country Club where she resided for 35 years. During that time she married Gus Smeland and enjoyed traveling until his passing in 1993. Marg loved life and her greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends. Because her father had been a photographer, she loved making photo albums for each member of the family and also made photo albums documenting her many trips. She also loved to collect Shirley Temple dolls, movies and other trivia. Her love of travel took her to Hawaii 25 different times plus trips plus trips to Australia, Germany and various cruises to the Caribbean. She treasured her time at the mobile home park with her dear friends and various activities such as dancing, playing cards, playing pool and potlucks, She also loved dining out. Marg's smile, laughter and her positive attitude about life was very contagious.
She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Marjorie Bailey; sister, Meredith; daughter, Claudia Herrick; former husband, Claude Councilman; and husband, Gus Smeland.
She is survived by her son, Gary Councilman; daughter-in-law, Diana; son, David Councilman; daughter -in-law, Pam; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other loving family members.
There will be a Celebration of Marg's life 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at the Everett Mobile Home Country Club clubhouse at 1415 84th St, Everett, WA.
