Master of Raploch.

NOTE: m. (1) Marion Ogilvy (dsp), (2) Margaret Hamilton and had 2daus.1. In Burke's Colonial Gentry for Moore of Caldwell, p.489, andin Burke's Commoners also for Mure of Caldwell, p. 453, itincludes:(a) that a William Moore, whose father John d. c.1544, marriedElizabeth, daughter ofa Hamilton of Raploch and aunt of GavinHamilton, commendator of Kilwinning and confidential minister ofMary Guise, regent of Scotland. I wonder if this Gavin is a sonof Rev Hans and thus that Elizabeth was Hans'brother and thedau. of Archibald of Raploch? No! Rubbish, in fact. But Gavinwas Hans' uncle and Elizabeth his gt-gt-aunt(b). This Wm had ason Wm who married Jean, daughter of Rev HansHamilton and sister of James, Earl of Clanbrassil (not true -James was Viscount Clanboye but father of the earl). Might thisbe a marriage of cousins? Yes.2. In Burke's Commoners, Vol III p, 179 there is an account ofsome very early Hamiltons:Sir John de Hamilton, Lord of Cadzow = Janet, dau of Sir JasDouglas of Dalkeith and had three sone:(a) Sir James H of Cadzow, ancestor ofthe ducal house ofHamilton,(b) David, ancestor of the Hamiltons of Dalserf,(c) Thomas H, of DarngaberThe last, Thomas H, married Helen, dau of Sir Henry Douglas ofLochleven and had James, ancestor of the Hamiltons of Raploch, represented by the Hamilton of Barns. So what's the connection between James H of Raploch and ourArchibald H of Raploch? (If any,of course.)3. In Burke's Commoners, Vol III, for Gray of Carntyne, pp.8 to12 they include a much longer and more detailed descent of theHamiltons of Cadzow:(a) Sir Walter de Hamilton, Lord of Cadzow, Lanark m. in 1324Mary dau of Adam Lord Gordon. Their two sons were:(i) Sir David H- see (b)(ii) Sir John H., ancestor of the Hamiltons of Innerwick andtheEarls of Haddington. (CP refers to "The Memorials of the Earlsof Haddington" by Sir William Fraser, LL D, pub in Edinburgh in1899.)(b) SirDavid m a daughter of Wm, Earl of Ross, and they had twochildren:(i) Sir David - see (c)(ii) Sir Walter H., ancestor of the Hamiltons of Cambeskeith andGrange.(c) Sir David de H, Lord of Cadzow, d.bef 1392, m. Janetta, dauof Sir Wm Keith of Galston and they had these sons:(i) John -see (d)(ii) David, ancestor of the Hamiltons of Bonland(iii) William, ancestor of the Hamiltons of Brathgate(iv) Andrew, ancestor of the Hamiltons of Uldston(v) John, ancestor of the Hamiltons of Bardowie(d) Sir John Hamilton, Lord of Cadzow m. Janet, dau. of SirJames Douglas of Dalkeith and they had these sons:(i) Sir James - see (e)(ii) David, ancestor of the Hamiltons of Dalserf(iii) Thomas of Darngaller, ancestor of the Hamiltons ofRaplock, Barnes, Torrance, Westburn, Aitkenhead, the earls ofClanbrassil, etc.(e) Sir John H,. Lord of Cadzow m. Janet 1st dau.of SirAlexander Livingston of Callander, ancestor of the earls ofLinlithgow and their sons were:(i) Sir James H., later Lord H., who married Mary Stuart(ii) Sir Alexander H. of Silverton hill, the ancestor of theHamiltons of Silverton Hill, Cubardy, Newton, and Westport.Somehow or other Sir Alexander's male line died out and therepresentation came to the Grays of Carotyne. This leaves unanswered the question of what connection, if any, there might be between the above Hamiltons of Raplock and theArchibald H of Raploch, the subject of this entry...Now for the ScotsPeerage...It has:Sir James Hamilton of Cadzow, succeeded his father before 1392.He married before or about 1388, Jacoba. daughter of Sir JamesDouglas of Dalkeith and had issue:1. JAMES who succeeded, (see below)2. DAVID, said to be the ancestor of the Hamiltons of Dalserf.3. WALTERof whom little is known. He is named in a charterdated 20 May 1441, bySir James Hamilton of Cadzaw, afterwardsLord Hamilton, granting to hiscousin James Hamilton, son of thelate Walter Hamilton, the lands of Raploch and others. ThisWalter therefore seems to be the true ancestor ofthe Hamiltonsof Raploch and others. The Thomas referred to in thisconnection in the House of Hamilton, and described as ofDaragabee is not found so styled, and he appears to have been aservant and not a son of the family.JAMES, d. bef. 1440 and married Janet, dau of AlexanderLivingstone, Lord of Callendar, on 20 Oct 1422. Their first sonwas James, 1st Lord Hamilton.Accepting this account, it still leaves unresolved thedescentof Archibald, the father of the vicar of Dunlop. My guess is thatthis Archibald was either son or grandson ofthe James Hamilton who wasgranted Raploch by Sir James Hamiltonof Cadzow, later Lord Hamilton.__________________________________________________________________TFPL, Jan 2002: What an interesting analysis in the above. Itnow appears thatArchibald was the great-grandson of the JamesH. who was granted Raploch in 1441, that Archibald indeed heldRaploch for a limited time, inheriting it from his elder brotherThomas, that Archibald was not married soRaploch went to hisnext brother Gavin and that Hans was Johannes or John and wasArchibald's illegitimate son. Gordon Johnson and Diane Baptiehave provided the information on this and currently Diane is,hopefully, obtaining copies of three key documents to confirmthis descent._________________________________________________________August 2004, TFPL: Yet more information, from the "House ofHamilton", pp. 730-5 by Lt-Col George Hamilton, pub 1933 inEdinburgh. Thankfully he takes into accountthe findings of TheScots Peerage. In this book he shows this descent:Sir John Hamilton of Cadzow= Jacoba Douglas|Walter, d. bef 20 May 1441 poss. = a dau. of the Laird of Lochleven|James Hamilton, received Raplochfrom his cousin, wife unknown.|William Hamilton, poss = Margaret, dauof a Baillie of Lamington|James Hamilton - Isabel, dau. of Weir of Blackwood|Four sons, successively holding Raploch: James, Thomas,Archibaldand Gavin, a son John of Nilsland and two daus, possibly a Martha and Katherine.Archibald is reported to have m. (1) Mary or marion Ogilvie andthey had no children, (2) Margaret dau of Jhn Hamilton of Newtonand they had two daus, Margaret who m. James Somervell ofCambusnethan and Jeanwho m. Robert Baillie of Cultness andthereafter Park, a brother of Carfine B. Archibald's death wasbef. 27 Sep 1561., p.7
