Born on April 15, 1920 in Bonn, Germany, Dietrich Puetter joined the Luftwaffe in 1939 and started training as a pilot. Within months, World War II had started and he and his crew were flying reconnaissance missions deep into Soviet territory. After being shot down and spending seven years as a prisoner of war in the Soviet Union, he returned to Germany in 1949.

Mr. Puetter started his civil aviation career in 1952 in Switzerland as a pilot for Swiss Air. In 1957 he returned to Germany where he served as Chief Pilot and Manager of Operations for the German airline, LTU. In 1962 he joined the German Federal Aviation Administration (LBA) and ultimately became chief of Personnel and Licensing. In 1972, Mr. Puetter moved to Montreal, Canada, working in the same role for the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Retired since 1980, today (2010) Mr. Puetter lives in Sidney, BC, Canada with his wife of 60 years, Brigitte, not far from his son Juergen, daughter-in-law Julie, and grandson Alexander.
