Published 3 December 2006 in The Salt Lake Tribune (UT) --------------- Atlantic City Visitor By Elaine Louise Schaefer 2009 The date was 9/11/71. Eleanor and fourteen members of her family were seated in the huge convention auditorium, of Atlantic City, New Jersey. That night the hall was packed to the rafters, as the final episode of competition for MISS AMERICA, 1972 was about to begin. Eleanor's youngest daughter, Laurel Lea, was competing for the national crown, representing her home state of Ohio. The excitement was electric; everyone waved banners and posters announcing the candidate from their state. One of the people in Eleanor's group was Janie Schaefer, wife of Eleanor's oldest son, Chip, and mother to all three of Eleanor's grandchildren ---Lisa, Steve and Jim. The curtains opened. The pageant began with the patriotic theme, "How this Land Can Sing". Laurel Lea appeared with the other state contestants, singing and dancing to the sounds of the Miss-America orchestra. Abruptly Janie Schaefer sat up in her chair and grabbed the hand of her husband, Chip. "She said, "You'll never believe this but I KNOW your father is here in this auditorium tonight." Chip looked at her thoughtfully. He knew his wife had an uncanny sixth sense about all manner of events. If she felt the presence of a deceased family member, he was not going to cast any aspersions. Janie was quiet for a while, watching the progression of events. After the crowning of Miss America, 1972, Janie went over to Eleanor and said to her, "I believe your husband was here in this audience tonight." We have faith that the enduring spirit of a loved one can enter our lives at any time; and on 9/11/71 it appears that Eleanor's beloved husband's presence was there in convention Hall.
