Müller and Sophia Weickel line8: Witnesses: George RETTIG and Marie WEICKEL line9: The Very Reverend Lucas GOTTBEHOEDE, Order of St.Francis of Assissi This sacramental record of marriage at St. Francis Seraph Church was obtained from the Historical Archives of the Chancery, Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Sophia WEICKEL was a Catholic, and in order to marry Charles MILLER who was non-Catholic, she had to seek permission from the local bishop to marry Charles. Although Charles was not required to become Catholic, he had to promise to raise his family Catholic. Note that Charles signed his name as Konrad E MILLER and that the priest writes his upper case E in 3 places the same as his upper case C. The document is written in German words with German Kurrent characters. My transcription is partial since the handwriting is poor. The witness George Rettig was born 2jul1854 in Bensheim, Hesse, Germany and he arrived at New York 15sep1871 on the ship Bremen. ----------------------------------------------------------- Three 1870 US census entries listed for Conrad Charles Miller living in Hamilton County, Ohio. He signed his name Konrad C Muller on his 1874 marriage record; I will refer to him as Konrad. ==================================== The 1870 record most likely to be our Konrad is on page11 2nd ward, Cincinnati, Hamilton Co, Ohio 10jun1870 Willigner [Miller] Konrad 19 M W, Waiter in Hotel, Hessen ----------- The most likely way for Konrad to meet his 1st wife Sophia Weickel was through her younger sister Catherine Weickel who married Valentine Scola. In 1854 the Scola family immigrated 2 years after the Weickel family. These 2 families were from the Hesse German town Bensheim. Valentine was 10 years older than both his wife Catherine and Konrad. Valentine owned a bakery at 72 east Pearl St in Cincinnati, and in 1869 he married Catherine when she was 17. In 1870 census Sophia was still living on her father's farm located 13 miles NE of Cincinnati. Three years later (1873 Cincinnati City Directory, Weigel Sophia, servt. 72 E. Pearl) Sophia Weickel is living with her sister Catherine & husband Valentine Scola at his bakery, and (1873 Cincinnati directory, Miller Chas. painter, bds. 74 Pearl) Konrad is living in the boarding house next door to the bakery. Konrad's 1870 residence in 2nd ward of Cincinnati was Fireman's Hall boarding house 65 W. 5th Street (south side of street) between Walnut & Vine Streets. It was operated by the proprietor Christian Heeg and his family who appear in the census among 42 people in this boarding house. The bakery of Bro/Sis in-law Valentine Scola/Katherine Weickel is 3blks east + 2.5blks south at 72 E. Pearl. The first child of Konrad & Sophia was named Charles Valentine Miller, so Valentine Scola must have played a major role in their lives up to this point. Konrad's 1870 residence faced the 5th Street Market which was a block long shed built in 1829 housing 54 smelly stalls of firms engaged in the butchering trade. The roof had a coupla with bell on the west end. On 4feb1870 at 3pm as the butchers closed for their day, the City Council's surprise team of 90 demolition men backed by 50 policemen removed the old market that same day. This was done to provide space for the Tyler Davidson Fountain which was unveiled on 6oct1871. The entrance of Konrad's residence was just 80 feet south of this landmark Fountain. The boarding house was demolished in 1873 when Fountain House (European Hotel) 63 & 65 W.5th proprietor Charles Sissman was in it's location. Christian Heeg b.1834 Hesse & Amalia Wiegand b.mar1844 Hesse married 1868 at St. John's Unitarian Church on 12th and Elm. Also in same boarding house is Amelia Wiegand b.1810 Hesse. ==================================== The 1870 less likely to be our Konrad is on page47 Miami Twp, Hamilton Co, Ohio 8jul1870 postoffice Cleves Miller Charles 19 M W, Farm Laborer, Germany ------------ Charles Miller was residing on a farm located NW of Cincinnati in the house of Bernard Heuermann, 3.3 miles SW of Henry WEICKEL farm & 2.4 miles SW of St Bernard Catholic church at Taylors Creek. Bernard had lived in Cincinnati before being on this farm. Perhaps he met Charles in Cincinnati between 1866 and 1870 since they were both of Lutheran religion. Bernard moved to Nebraska in 1873, he died there on 9dec1897. Statement on the program for the Master & Heuermann Families reunion 5 & 6 Aug 2000: His full name was Dietrich Berhard Heinrich Heuermann, born April 3rd 1829. His parents' home was Steinbeck, Enger Parish, Westphalia, Germany. At the age of 18 he immigrated to America, arriving with 75cents in his pocket. His money and his shoes had been stolen during his voyage as a stowaway on a freighter. He worked his way up the Mississippi River from New Orleans to Cincinnati. He married Katharine Maria Louisa Denimann (Her father died when she was two. She also used her stepfather's last name Strothmann, until she was married.) Louisa and D.B. came to Arlington [Nebraska] and raised their children, our grandparents, and great grand parents. ==================================== The 1870 definitely not our Konrad because he died in 1877 is on page140 3rd ward, Cincinnati, Hamilton Co, Ohio 16jul1870 Miller Conrad 18 M W, LockSmith, Hesse Darmstadt Hart [Heeb] John 17 M W, LockSmith, H Dramstadt ------------ These two men were both from Lang-Gons, traveled across Atlantic Ocean together, and resided together in the same Cincinnati boarding house 119 E.Front Street proprietor Frederich Hellmich.
