BIOGRAPHY: **Taken from "Our Family" compiled in 1981 by Carroll BAIRD (neeRUMPEL)** Edwin (Ed) John RUMPEL was born February 2, 1914 on the homestead near Balgonie, Saskatchewan. He attended New Onta
rio School, after the 8th grade he stayed home to help out on the farm. Ed attended the Edenwold Baptist Church and was baptised by Rev. Ed FENSKI in 1928. He was active in the choir and with young pe
ople. On October 14, 1938; he married Edna HOLLERBAUM, who was raised in theEdenwold district. Ed and Edna had three girls; Marlene, Carroll, and Donna. After their marriage they lived with Ed's paren
ts for a few months until they were able to rent a farm of their own in the McLean district (they rented for one year). They then moved and rented a farm in theEdenwold district and later moved back t
o the Balgonie area. They rented another farm with housing, but Ed eventually bought his own land in this area. There were no buildings on the land. In 1947, they moved to the town of Edenwold where E
d built their home. He continued to work the farm he had bought. In addition to grain farming, Ed worked in the Parish & Heimbecker Grain Elevator in Edenwold, 1947-48, and the Co-op Store, 1950-51. E
d also did carpentry work building barns and houses. In 1956, he was badly burnt in a fire which destroyed a church he was building on a indian reserve north of Edenwold. Ed was a member of the Edenwo
ld Grain Club, Edenwold Curling Club, Edenwold School Board, and President of the Skating Rink. Both Ed and Edna were members of the Edenwold Baptist Church, Ed was active in Sunday School work and la
ter a Deacon, a position he held til the closure of the church. In 1959, Ed starting working for the Balgonie Artificial Insemination Co. as a technician. This eventually led to their move to the town
of Balgonie in 1963 where the office for the Balgonie Unit was located. He continued to work the farm until 1974 when he sold it to his son-in-law, Don STRUDWICK. Officially he reached retirement in
1980, but continued to work. Ed enjoyed doing bits of carpentry work in his leisure time and took an interest in gardening, looking after his raspberries and strawberries. Curling was his favourite wi
nter sport.
