Angabe: J. Hansen
They emigrated to the U.S. in September 1896, leaving from Hamburg on July 1 on the ship “Patria” (see “Explanations,” below) and arriving at the port of New York on September 10. They traveled with their younger son Frank Henry. According to the ship’s passenger list (Vol. 373-7 I, VIIA 1,
Band 094B, sheet 850, lines 98–100):
Franz Nentwig, 48, joiner
Marie, 47
Franz, 10

NOTE: The dates of travel need some clarification. The passenger list states “Abgang des Schiffes den 1 Juli 1896” (Ship departed on July 1, 1896), and other reports indicate that they did not arrive until September: was there a layover en route, e.g., at Southampton?
Their son Richard had emigrated in November 1892, and then he paid for Ida’s passage in November 1894. Ida, in turn, paid for Franz, Maria, and Frank Henry’s passage.
The passenger list indicated that they were bound for St. Paul, and presumably they went directly there.
From 1897(?) through 1906, they lived at 127 W. Isabel St.; in 1900, and possibly 1899, Ida lived there also (she married in 1900).
In the 1900 U.S. census, they were listed as:
Frank, 51, laborer at brewery
Mary, 50
Ida, 26, daughter
Frank, 15, son, helper at shoe factory
The following item appeared in The West Saint Paul Times, with no further explanation (including whether it referred to the father or the son):
“Mr. Frank Nentwig, of West Isabel street, left on Monday last for North Branch, where he will remain a couple of months.” — February 22, 1902, page 5
(There was no mention in the paper when he returned, and I have no information about why he went there.)
In the 1905 Minnesota census (by which time Ida had married), they were still living at 127 W. Isabel St.:
Frank, 57, carpenter
Mary, 54
Frank, 21, barber
He filed his Declaration of Intention on October 21, 1905.
From 1907 through 1914, they lived at 725 Stryker Ave.
In the 1910 Minnesota census, they were living at Richard and Theresia’s house, but were listed as a separate household:
Frank, 61
Mary, 60
Mary died February 5, 1914, at age 64, in Ramsey county, Minnesota. The cause of death was
pancreatic cancer. (See Death Certificate #1914-MN-021441.) A Death Notice was in the St. Paul
Pioneer Press, February 6, page 10. She was buried in Calvary Cemetery, St. Paul.
The following obituary was in The West Saint Paul Times, February 7, page 5:
“Mrs. Mary Nentwig, wife of Mr. Frank Nentwig [sic] died Thurs. at the family residence, 725
Stryker avenue, at the age of 65 years. She is survived by her husband, by two sons, Richard,
and Frank Jr., and by one daughter Mrs. Thomas Schurr, all of this city. The funeral will
be held this morning with services at St. Matthews church.”

Frank’s Life After Mary’s Death
1914 – 1918 (St. Paul, Minnesota)
After Mary’s death, Frank moved to Ida and Thomas’ home at 220 E. Lucy St. Where he lived in 1916-17 isn’t clear, but in 1918, he was at Richard Jr.’s home.
Frank died December 18, 1918, at age 71, in West Side General Hospital, St. Paul, Minnesota. The cause of death was appendicitis and a large gallstone obstruction. (See Death Certificate # 1918-MN-031515.) A Death Notice was in St. Paul Pioneer Press, December 19, page 12. His death was not mentioned in The West Saint Paul Times. He was also buried in Calvary Cemetery, St. Paul, Minnesota.
