The estatesatthistimeincluded Upper Grimmet, Lower or Nether Grimmet andAttiquin.Therecords ofFrank McElvain list the children of Patrick andIsobelKennedyas John (mJane Corry), Patrick (m Jane Forrester12-4-1615),Thomas,David, andAlexander. Thomas was alive in 1617(GlasgowCommissariat).PBGR mentionsPatrick apprenticed to WilliamHaliburton inEdinburgh(probably son ofPatrick and Jane Forrester.) Adecree ofabsolution onrecord at Holyrood,February 1592, made by thePrivy Councilin favor ofJohn, Earl of Cassilis, names five McllvanesPatrick Mcllvene, elder ofGrimmet, John Mcllveanne ofGrimmet, younger,John McllveanneofAuchenharrie, Gilbert Mcllveane,Flesheur, in Maybole, andDavidMcllveane, Flesheur in Maybole. The word'Flesheur' referstotheretailing of meats, or the flesh of animals forfood.Otherrecordsindicate Alexander, whose will dated August 1, 1620 madehimaresidentof Ballantrae.

At Holyrood House, Edinburgh, 22 Feb. 1597, a document wassignedbyKingJames VI confirming the lands as follows 'TheKingasadministrator, etc., confirms to one Patrick Mcllivane ofGrumet(fromwhom IsobellaKennedy, his wife, is conveyed a life estate)21/2measuresof land inthe Manor of Lower Grumet and 1/2 measure oflandadjacent, calledWillistoun (occupied by J.C. In the Register of Sasines for 1601, Patrick's wife isreferredtoas'Isobel Kennedy, Lady Grymett'. This has given rise toallsortsofspeculation. Torrence and Allied Families declares that'SirPatrickwasknighted for bravery on the field of battle'. What battleisnot told.Itseems much more likely that Isobell brought the titleof'Lady' withher. One source says she was the widow of Kennedy ofKnockdon.Since theuseof the title after the name denotes a widow, itseems fairlyplainthatis all it means and had nothing to do with Patrick,no matterhowbravehe may have been.

These were particularly violent times in the historyofScotland.TheReformation was in full swing, and the religious upheavalisindicatedbythe following

On May 19, 1553, Hugh and David Kennedy came with 100followerswithjacks,spears, and guns to the Parish Kirk of Kirkoswald andtheCollegeKirk ofMaybole, and abused the sacrament of OHaly Kirk',(Theelementsof the Massand other sacred items. ) The Earl of Carrickwasquick torespond, and anumber of persons had to give caution(bond)afterwards tothe extent of3,000 Pounds for their future goodBehavior.

At about the same time, one of the Kennedys living at Dunuretriedtoseizethe lands of Crossaugel Abbey. He tried to persuadethepersonresponsiblefor the deeds to turn them over by slowly roastinghimover afire. Hesurvived the roasting, but did not turn over the deeds.

The Lairds of Grimmet were involved in a particularlybitterfeudbetweenthe Kennedy Earls of Cassilis and their cousins, theKennedy House of Bargany, which reacheditsmostintense fury between 1569and 1602. It climaxed with thekidnappingofthe Countess of Cassilis as shereturned to Ayr from a visitinGalloway. She was escorted as she travelledby various members ofthefamily andfriends, among whom was John. 'theyoung Laird of Grimet' .

Pitcairns History of the Kennedys is quoted The LairdofDramurchie(ThomasKennedy, brother of the Laird of Bargany) besiegedtheHouse ofAuchinsulland took prisoners the Countess of Cassilis andtheyoungLaird of Grimakand Quentin Crawford. A fatal encountertookplacebetween the Earl ofCassilis and the Laird of Bargany(GilbertKennedy)in which GilbertKennedy's 'Horse was slain and the Earl'sbridlewasshot in two, wherebyhis horse cast him and struck his arm outofjoint. The young Laird ofGrimak was stricken through the chin and heandhishorse both strucken tothe earth. This wound was almostcertainlynotfatal, as is sometimereported, for John appears in severalrecordsafterthis date.

In 1602, the Register of the Privy Council shows an order bythekingforLady Bargeny to put at liberty Hew, Master ofCassilis,McIlvaneyoungerof Grumet and others 'lately apprehended byThomas KennedyofDrummurchieand his accomplices'. According to Robertson,ThomasKennedyhad takenthe prisoners to the family castle and turned themoverto thecare ofhis mother, Lady Bargany. Hew Kennedy had been wounded, aswell asJohnMcIlvain, and she supplied the nursing.

Later in 1602 the king issued a Decreet ofAbsolvitorconcerningaretaliation by the Earl. 'By the Privy Council infavor ofJohn, EarlofCassilis and others for 'convocation of his highnessOlieges, andbearingand wearing of jacks, steel bonnets, corsletsandlances, hackbutts (?)and pistols, breaking of hishighness'peace'.' It goes onto say 'Thatwhere, upon the elleventh day ofDecemberinstant, Johnne,Earl ofCassilis, John Corrie of Kelwood, HewKennedy ofPenqhuirry,JohnDavidsoun of Penny glen, Oliver Laird ofCulleinzie,PatrickMcilveane, elder of Gremmat, Johne Mcilveane, younger ofGremmat...AlexanderSchaw, tutour of Gremmat to be warned by the laws ofthisrealmand Actsof Parliament come in hostile and warlike manner furththetownofMayboll, and lay at wait for Gilbert Kennedy of Bargany, hisfreindsandservants, as they were coming the highway from the burghofAirtowardsthe said LardOs own dwelling house, and invaded andpersuedthemof theirlives'. There follows a description of the battle,sayingt11at anumberof firearms were discharged and a number ofBragany'scompany were'hurtand wounded'. And more to the point, Gilbert ofBarganywas slain.Againthe tone of the complaint was not so much the doingin ofBargany, but ithas a rather plaintive ring as it goes on 'theyhave.brokenhishighnessO peace in that COU11trey; whereby manyinconveniencesareliketo fallout, to the trouble and disquieting of thewholecountry, withoutremedy being provided. ' The Earl of Cassilisandeveryoneconcerned withthe fracas were slapped on the wrist and toldthat, sincethey admittedto disorderly conduct and promised to keep'hishighnessOpeace andkeeping of good rule and quietnes in thecountryhereafter, under thepain of rebellion ', no further action would betaken.

Also in 1602, the Privy Council issued bonds whichguaranteedthatPatrickMcilvaine of Grumet and his son, John the YoungerofGrumet, would not'intercommune' with Adam Boyd of Pinkhill duringhisrebellion.

In 1604 bonds were again issued against Patrick and John nottoharmJames,Earl of Moray, his tutors or curators.

In 1604 there was a summons of treason against ThomasKennedyofDrummurchieand Walter Mure of Cloncarde for murderous attacksontheEarl of Cassi11iswho, with John McllVane younger and others, wastakenprisoner andincarcerated for 15 days.

Other records of Patrick McIlvane include signing as a witnessinadeed,January 4, 1586, an he was a witness to a caution byJohnKennedy,1608.

Patrick died in November 1613. His testament dative (will)isrecorded15June, 1615.
