Karl Kreis hat seine Memoiren in einem Buch aufgeschrieben, "A tale of stainless steel".

"I recall that when your father, Ludwig, was living with us in California Dad told us a number of such stories. Oncle Eduard, for instance, lived upstairs at the von Einem Strasse house until he went into the Army and disappeared in France
during WW I.
Father told us that the family had no further information about Eduard, but I think that the German Federal Military Archive might have a record if you are interested. I believe, this archive has been moved to a suburb of Berlin.
Father also told me about the time when he was very young and got his head caught between the stone or concrete posts of the balustrade in the rear of the house in Essen. He could not get out, and grandmother had to call the fire brigade to
extract him. They did so by chipping away some of the stone next to his head. In 1960, I was in Essen with Dad and he took me to the house. We walked around to the rear and he showed me the marks the firemen made where he was stuck. There is a
photograph from 1909 showing the children standing in front of this balustrade. In that photograph, Uncle Hans looks just like my grandson Theodore. You probably have this photograph.
Another time, Father, Henry, perhaps other brothers, and some friends, probably including a fellow named Heinie Demare, went camping in the country. They set up camp and in the morning made coffee in the darkness. As they drank the coffee, they
noticed that it was lumpy. When the sun rose, they looked into the pond from which they had scooped the water for the coffee and saw that it was full of tadpoles.
My brother, Tom, and I had a good time with your father when he was in San Francisco. Dad had much trouble getting him into the University of San Francisco because at that time (and maybe still) American universities did not understand the abitur
and were reluctant to accept it. Dad had to visit many people that he knew there explain the German school system, how the Gymnasiums worked, the importance of the abitur, and to get them to admit Ludwig. Father succeeded, Ludwig was enrolled.
The university people were very happy because your father was such a good soccer player and he added much to their team. I went to watch him play once at Balboa Stadium, and I was very impressed by his performance."
