Sylvanus Johnston was born in Athens County, Ohio, in 1844, and died inhis home at Geddes, S.D. on Friday, Jan. 26, 1906 at the age of 62 years with adisease known as paralysis of the kidneys and bowels. He was buried in the Pleasant Lawn Cemetery, Geddes, S.D. He was a Civil War Veteran. When a young manof 18, he enlisted in the Civil War at Muscatine, Iowa, Aug. 2, 1862, in Co. B,24th Reg. of Iowa Infantry (Capt. Wm. T. Rigby) and served for 3 years being wounded in the foot in one battle in the south. He was honorably discharged at theclose of the war at Savannah, Ga., July 17, 1865. Survivors are his wife, and a large family of children who were there when he passed away. They are Cora Hotchkiss of Geddes; Nellie Hudson of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Edna Kelly of Blunt,S.D.; Mrs. Ida Stafford of White Swan, S.D.; Buryl, Hazel, Roy of Geddes, S.D. There are two brothers, A.J. and Edward of Ida Grove, Iowa, were also present. His mother and 3 sisters in Wilton Junction, Iowa, and a sister in Grinnell, Iowa,are also living. Funeral services were held from the Congregational Church in Geddes on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Rev Gallagher was the pastor officiating.
