Notizen zu dieser Person
From the "Descendants of Joseph Pobst", compiled by Mary Rose Pobst, page 61, Joe was born in Ohio and Clara in Prussia. Joe was the second Joseph in the family. The census records in 1840 show thefirst Joe living at that time. He probably died a short time before this Joe was born. Joe was a private in the Civil War. He was 18 when he went into service and got out when he was 21. Joe had aheart of steel. He could tell of using a bayonet on men. He was wounded at one time during the war. He came home to plant the crop and his leg was in real bad shape. They cleaned it up for him andhe had to go back to the battlefield before it healed. He was in one of the last battles of the war at Cape. It was at the Fort close to the railroad depot. He told of each side throwing chewing tobacco to each other before they would start to fight. He had a hearing loss after the war. Joe was 24 when he married Clara. They farmed in the New Hamburg area. Joe and Clara both died of winterfever, which is now known as pneumonia. They son Frank died in February of 1900 of the same thing.
