Cause of Death: Carcinoma pancreas/ abdominal metastasis Gustav AdolphMikat was my father by Evelyn Mikat. When Gustav came over to U.S.A. in 1929 with brother Eduard, he couldnot speak English very well. Many times he hadto eat peanut buttersandwiches, because he could not read a menu in a restaurant. He wasa Tool and Die Maker by trade, but because of the language problemandthe depression, he did not get this type of position right away. In1930,he met Sophie Maerz He worked as a hotel janitor, in a chicken slaughter house basement(the smell was so bad that at first heoften had to take time tovomit), and he even worked in Roosevelt's WorkCamp, building parks, etc. However, he was very grateful for these jobs as not many mencould find jobs during thisperiod. When World War II began, Gustavwas able to get a job, using his trade, at Cadillac Motor Company onClark Street in Detroit, Michigan. He got an army deferment becausehe worked in a plant that made arms and equipment for thewar. Hisgreatest fear was having to go to war and shoot his German brothers. Gustav belonged to the Rheingold Men's Choir, which at one time hadover fifty men in its membership. They were a very good choir and myfather had an excellent bass voice. In fact, they would have concertsseveral times a year in various famous music halls in Detroit. During World War II, my Father and Mother bought a 150 acre farmwhich they intended to farm. In1945, they moved to farm 5937 CarneyRoad, Yale, MI. Soon after, however, Gustav was making goodwages atCadillac, so he just farmed on weekends and vacations, and lived inthe city during the week. My father went to Germany whenever it was possible to visit his motherand favorite sister, Erika, whom he loved very much. Gustav was a very intelligent and handsome man. The lessons andadvicemy father gave me have helped me through many " storms"throughout my life. I loved him very much and continue to miss him. Baptism/Endowment proxy -- kwm
