ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Ernest Joseph Behling, 102, of 405 Windswept Drive, Asheville, N.C., formerly of Weedsport and Baldwinsville, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, at the Hospice Solace Center.
Mr. Behling was born Sept. 9, 1901, in Baldwinsville, and was a son of the late Ernest William and Nellie O'Shea Behling. He was a graduate of Central City Business School in Syracuse. Deciding that he preferred agriculture, he went into farmingwith his father in Baldwinsville.
In 1942, the U.S. government purchased several properties and the family moved to Weedsport. Upon his retirement in 1967, he and his wife Gladys, returned to the Baldwinsville property. After the government repurchased the property in the early1990s for a planned community, Mr. Behling spent several winters in Florida with his daughter, Annette Arlene Nelson, and several summers with his son, William Ernest, now deceased, in Mexico, N.Y.
Since 1996, he spent nearly all of his time with his daughter, Ann Marie Behling in Asheville, N.C., continuously since October 2000. He was a member of St. Eugene's Catholic Parish while living in Asheville, and he rarely missed Mass.
Mr. Behling married Gladys Marie Ford in 1930 and she predeceased him in February 1983.
He is survived by his two daughter and another son, Lawrence Leon, in Phoenix, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Viewing hours will be 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, at Allanson-Glanville-Tappan Funeral Home in Phoenix, N.Y. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Phoenix. Spring burial will follow in the Weedsport Rural Cemetery.
