Edited from the LONG ISLAND PRESS, 1952

Services for Herman H. Brockmann, Jr., last survivor of a generation of Ozone Park farmers, will be held at 8 pm in the Clarence F. Simonson Chapel, Ozone Park.

Mr. Brockmann, whose father started the family dynasty in 1862, was the last of four brothers who operated 50 acres in the Cedar Lane area of Ozone Park. The family raised 30 different varieties of vegetables and Mr. Brockmann was considered one of the leading radish specialists in the east.

Born 75 years ago, he died Sunday in Jamaica Hospital after a short illness.

Three years ago the Brockmann family successfully defended their land against the invasion of a drive in movie theatre by winning a zoning battle which attracted interest throughout Long Island.

The Brockmann tract is part of the original land cleared and broken by Mr. Brockmann's father who came to Ozone Park when Queens was considered "a wilderness of blackberries and cedar trees".

After his father's death, he and his brothers, John Herman, Henry J. and Dietrich took over the land in equal shares. Most of it is now operated by his nephews although a few acres have been sold to outside interests.

A former secretary of the South Side Vegetable Growers Association Mr. Brockmann was also a 50 year member of the Woodhaven Exempt Volunteer Firemen's Assocation.

Burial will take place in the Lutheran Cemetary.
