George Brackman was born 2 Sep 1840 in Germany to unknown parents. At about the age of six, his parents and sister died during their voyage to America - they were buried at sea. When George landed in New Orleans, Louisiana, he was taken in by a family until the age of about 16.
n 1860 Census, Sulphur Fork, Lafayette, Arkansas, George was living with the family of Samuel W. Mays (a merchant at the age of 19 years old); George is shown as born in Germany and a salesman (probably for Samuel Mays). On the same Census page was (George's future wife) Ada F. Mitchell; born in South Carolina, age 16, living with Dorothy Davis (her grandmother), Eleanor Rogers (her mother), James S. Davis (her uncle) and Sarah Rogers (her sister).
In 1861 at the start of the Civil War, George joined the "Bright Star Rifles Co.," Company D, 4th Arkansas Infantry under Captain J.C. Tyson in Van Buren County. On 2 Aug 1861, George was discharged on account of physical disability.

According to the marriage license at Lafayette County Courthouse in Lewisville, Arkansas, George married ADEN MITCHEL (or Mitchell) on 1 Oct 1861 in Lafayette County, Arkansas. The marriage license was filed and recorded on 7 Oct 1861. Ada died during child birth about 1878. He later married EMMA S. TERRY.
He made his home in Bowie County, Texas from 1880 until the early 1900s.
He was living with his son Marcus Brackman in Miller County, Arkansas in 1910.
By 1920 he was living in "Sweet Home" Confederate Veterans retirement home in Pulaski County Arkansas where he died in 1924.
