MALE Gozlin

Count, fl. 942.

On 15 March 942, Gozlin appears as count as a witness in a charter of his brother Adalbero, bishop of Metz ["Signum Ottonis ducis Signum Adalberti comitis Signum Rodulphi comitis Signum Gozlini comitis ..." Parisot (1907-8), 58: 15, n. 5; Barth (1990), 193]. The region over which he was count is not known. He is named as a brother of bishop Adalbero by the life of abbot John of Gorze, where he is seen holding the village of Varengéville ["Ea facile impetrata, villam quondam iuris monasterii, quam etiam tunc germanus ipsius Gozilinus in benefitio retinebat, quæ Waringis villa dicitur, eis continuo contulit; ..." Vita Ioh. Gorz., c. 99, 128; "... villam Waringisi dictam ... . Tenebat igitur villam illam unus fratrum eius carior ceteris; ..." Miracula S. Gorgonii, c. 10, MGH SS 4: 241].

In 943, the last will of Gozlinus nomine miles quidam, ex nobilissimis regni Chlotarii ducens prosapiam was executed by his widow Uda and son Regingerus with his brothers Fridericus, Gisilbertus, and Sigebertus among the witnesses ["C. Acta est hec tradicio anno Dominice incarnationis DCCCCº Xº LIIIº, regni domni Ottonis VIIº indictione II, temporibus domni Ogonis abbatis venerande memorie. Wampach (1935), 193-7 (#156)].

Countess Uda was still living 18 May 963, when she refers to her husband Gozlinus and her sons Henricus, Reginherus, Godefridus, and Adalbero ["C. In nomine sancte et individue Trinitatis. Wampach (1935), 227-230 (#172); Of the witnesses, Sigefroid was Gozlin's brother Sigefroid of Luxemburg. For the other count, Richuvinus (Ricuin), whose relationship (if any) to Gozlin's stepfather, count Ricuin of Verdun (d. 923), is unknown, see Hlawitschka (1969), 92-98].

Date of Birth: Unknown.
Place of Birth: Unknown.

Date of Death: 18 October 942 [or, less likely, 943].
Gozlin was still living on 15 March 942, when he was witness to an act of his brother bishop Adalbero, and was deceased by the time of his wife's will in 943 [see above]. The necrology of Saint-Maximin gives 18 October as the date of death ["XV Kalendas Novembris. Gozilo comes qui cum uxore sua Uta, contulit ecclesiae Frisinga." Depoin (1908-10), 15: 304; Parisot (1907-8), 58: 15; since this obituary clearly refers to the present Gozlin, this date is preferable to the date of 16 February given for an otherwise unidentified Gozlin in Nec. Gorze, 69

Place of Death: Unknown.

Mother:
 Cunégonde/Kunigund, who m. (2) Ricuin, d. 923, count of Verdun
Gozlin was a brother of Adalbero, who is documented as a son of Wigeric and Cunégonde. It is not chronologically plausible that he was a son of Cunégonde's second marriage. See Cunégonde's page for discussion.

Spouses: Uda, living 19 May 963.

Children:

MALE Henri/Heinrich, living 963, d. 6 September, year unknown, count of Verdun.

MALE Reginar, living 963.
[For Reginar's children, see Parisse (1981), 29]

MALE Godefroid/Gottfried "the Captive", d. 3 September, 997 or later, count in Bidgau and Methingau; count of Verdun, before 965-after 997; marquis/duke of Eename; m.Mathilde von Sachsen, d. 25 May 1009.

MALE Adalbero, d. 23 January 989, archbishop of Reims, 969-989.
A letter of Gerbert to archbishop Adalbero refers to the captured Godefridus as his brother [Gerbert, Letters, 59 (#60)]. He died on 23 January 989, and was succeeded by Arnulf, illegitimate son of king Lothair ["10 Kal. Febr." Richer iv, 24-5, MGH SS 3: 636; Parisse (1981), 25 also cites the necrologies of Saint-Remi de Reims and Mouzon for the date of 23 January]

Commentary

Falsely attributed mother: Ève (Wigeric's supposed first wife. See Wigeric's page.)

Falsely attributed daughter: Gerberge, m. Megingoz.
Gerberge is stated to be daughter of a dux Godefroid and sister of another dux Godefroid who died without issue [Vita Adelheidis Abbatissae Vilicensis, MGH SS 15, 757], which has misled some to make her a sister of Godefroid of Verdun and a daughter of duke Gozlin [e.g., Vanderkindere (1902), 2: 170-1, 179]. However, this identification cannot be correct, for Gerberge's grandson Otto of Hammerstein was married to Godefroid of Verdun's daughter Ermengarde (see above). Gerberge was a sister of the duke Godefroid of Lorraine who died in 964 ["... Ex qua pestilentia obierunt ... et Godefridus, dux Lothariensis, ..." Continuator Reginonis, MGH SS 1: 627], and a first cousin of Godefroid of Verdun [see above under Ermengarde]. The relationship is discussed in more detail on the page of Gerberge's father count Godefroid.

Gozlin, Count of Bidgau and Methingau

Gozlin (911 – between 19 Oct 942 and 16 Feb 943), was count of the Ardennes and the Bidgau, and army commander for his brother, Adalberon I of Metz.

Gozlin was a son of Count Palatine Wigeric of Lotharingia and Cunigunda of France. In 930, he married Oda of Metz (905 – 10 Apr 963), a daughter of Count Gerard of Metz and Oda of Saxony. Through her mother Oda was a cousin of King Henry the Fowler of East Francia (Germany). Gozlin and Oda had the following children:

C. DUKES of LOWER LOTHARINGIA 1012-1023, 1046-1065 (FAMILY of WIGERICH)

1.GODEFROI, son of GODEFROI Comte de Verdun & his wife Mechtild of Saxony (-26 Sep 1023, bur Verdun Saint-Vanne). "Adalberonem…episcopum, Fredericum et Herimannum comites, Godefridum atque Gozelonem" are named (in order) the five sons of "comiti Godefrido" & "Mathildis Saxoniæ comitissa" in theGesta Episcoporum Virdunensium, which specifies that Godefroi and Gozelon succeeded as dukes[226]. TheGenealogica ex Stirpe Sancti Arnulfinames "Arnulphum comitem Flandrensem, Godefridum ducem, Gozelonem ducem, fratres" as children of "Mathildis soror Guepe et Berthe [Burgundiæ]"[227]. He was installed in 1012 asGODEFROI I Duke of Lower Lotharingiaby Emperor Heinrich II. The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines records that the emperor conferred "ducatus Lotharingie" on "comiti Godefrido Virdunensi, filio Godefridi Ardennensis" after the death of Otto Duke of Lower Lotharingia [Carolingian], an event which the chronicler records under 1005[228]. "Heinricus…Romanorum imperator augustus" renewed the privileges of Kloster Fulda by undated charter, placed in the compilation with other charters dated 1020, witnessed by "Godifridi ducis, Berinhardi ducis, Thiederici ducis, Welphonis comitis, Cunonis comitis, Kunrati comitis, Ottonis comitis, Adilbrahtis comitis, Bobonis comitis, Friderici comitis, Bezilini comitis, Ezonis comitis palatini"[229], the order of witnesses presumably giving some idea of the relative importance of these nobles at the court of Emperor Heinrich II at the time. "DucisGodefridieiusque fratris…marchionis Gozelonis" are named as present with Adalbold bishop of Utrecht at Driel, in an undated charter dated to before 1023, relating to the donation of Wamel[230]. TheAnnalesBlandiniensesrecord the death in 1023 of "Godefridus dux"[231]. The necrology of Liège Saint-Lambert records the death "VI Kal Oct" of "Godefridi pacifici ducis"[232].

2.GOZELON([968/73]-19 Apr 1044, bur Münsterbilsen). TheGenealogica ex Stirpe Sancti Arnulfinames "Arnulphum comitem Flandrensem, Godefridum ducem, Gozelonem ducem, fratres" as children of "Mathildis soror Guepe et Berthe [Burgundiæ]"[233]. Count in the March of Antwerp. "Henricus…rex" granted property "inter flumina…Nitæ…Thila…Wauerwald in comitatu Gotizonis comitis qui Antwerf dicitur situm" to "nostrum bestiarum Baldrico sanctæ Leodicensis ecclesiæ presul nec non Baldrico comiti" by charter dated 12 Sep 1008[234]. "DucisGodefridieiusque fratris…marchionis Gozelonis" are named as present with Adalbold bishop of Utrecht at Driel, in an undated charter dated to before 1023, relating to the donation of Wamel[235]. He succeeded his brother in 1023 asGOZELON I Duke of Lower Lotharingia. Wipo, in his description of the election of Konrad II King of Germany in 1024, names him "Gozilo Duke of the Ripuarians"[236]. He succeeded in 1033 asGOZELON I Duke of Upper Lotharingia. "Adelaydis comitissa uxor quondam…Ludouici comitis" donated property "per manum Gozelonis ducis atque Godefridi…et pro eius amore Dominique Frederici prefati ducis fratris" to Verdun Saint-Vanne by charter dated to [1038/40], subscribed by "dux Gozelo et eius filius Godefridus"[237]. TheChroniconof Bernold records the death in 1044 of "Gozzilo dux Lotharingorum"[238]. The necrology of Lüneburg records the death "19 Apr" of "Gozlinus dux"[239]. Heinrich III King of Germany regranted "comitatum…in Thrente" to the bishop of Utrecht by charter dated 22 May 1046, which specifies that the grant was made "post obitum Gozlini ducis nostre"[240]. m---. The name of Duke Gozelon's wife is not known. Duke Gozelon I & his wife had six children:

a)GODEFROI([1000/1015] -Verdun 30 Dec 1069, bur Verdun Cathedral). Herimannusnames "Gotefridus alter filius eius [=Gozzilo dux Lotharingorum]" when recording his being passed over in the succession to his father[241]. TheGenealogica ex Stirpe Sancti Arnulfinames "Godefridum ducem, Odam et Regelindam" as children of "Gozelo, frater Arnulphi et Godefridi"[242]. His birth date range is estimated on the basis of the estimated birth date of his father, and the more restricted birth date range of his sister Regelindis, although the absence of any information relating to his career before [1040] suggests that he may have been born in the later part of this period. He succeeded in 1044 asGODEFROI II Duke of Upper Lotharingia. He succeeded in 1065 asGODEFROIII"le Barbu"Duke of Lower Lotharingia.

- see below, Part E.

b)MATHILDE(-murdered Burg Cochem 17 Aug 1060). She is named "Mathildam, Gozelini ducis filiam" in theAnnales Weissemburgenses, which record that she was murdered by her husband[243]. TheMonumenta Epternacensianame "MathildeGozelonisducis filia" as wife of "Heinricus"[244]. TheAnnalesof Lambert von Hersfeld record in 1057 that “Heinricus palatinus comes Luthariorum” retired as a monk “in Gorzia”, but that “post paucos dies” he too back his wife and possessions (“uxoremque suam et possessiones...recepit”)[245]. The necrology of Weissenburg records the death "VI Kal Aug" of "Mahthild com a Henrico marito suo occiso 1060"[246]. mHEINRICH Pfalzgraf of Lotharingia, son of HEZZELIN Graf im Zülpichgau [Ezzonen] & his wife [--- of Carinthia] (-Echternach Abbey 29 Jul 1060).

c)GOZELON(-1046 before 22 May). Herimannusnames "Gozziloni filius Gozzilo dux Lotharingorum" when recording his succession to his father[247]. Heinrich III King of Germany installed him asGOZELON II Duke of Lower Lotharingiain 1044 in succession to his father, while appointing his older brother as Duke of Upper Lotharingia. He was described as "ignavus" by the chronicler Hermann Contract von Reichenau[248]. He was deposed as duke of Lower Lotharingia and replaced by Frédéric de Luxembourg. TheAnnales Altahensesrecord that the duchy was removed from "Gozziloni" and granted to "Friderico, Baioariæ ducis fratri"[249].
