I knew who Chester Rockey was. He was simple minded & possibly mentally handicapped. He never married & lived in the county home. He & a friend would walk into town & go to the baseball games at the edge of town. He was very friendly to everyone & he didn't know any strangers, they were all friends. (Judy G 3/2/06)

My Mom always said that Chester was shirttail relation, but she didn't know how we were related. When I was young he came to the Hyndman Reunions. If he was born today someone would have worked with him & I'm sure he could have supported himself, but back then they didn't have Special Ed. I'm sure I have his obit already, however, my filing system has run amuck & I can't find it right now. The service notice says 'The funeral service for Chester Laverne Rockey, 77, was at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 30, 1997 at Smith & Sons Funeral Home in Columbia City.' It tells who did the service & music. 'The committal service followed at Salem Cem in Wilmot.' It tells the pallbearers. 'Mr. Rockey, who touched many Columbia City Joint High School Athletes' lives, died Thursday, August 28.' (Judy G 5/2/06)

Chester Laverne Rockey, 77
September 27, 1919 - August 28, 1997

Chester Laverne Rockey, 77, died at noon Thursday, August 28, 1997, at The Oaks, where he had been a resident for several years.
Born in Etna Township on September 27, 1919, he was the son of James D. and Ethel Mae Lena Linn Rockey. His formative years were spent on a farm north of Etna.
Mr. Rockey lived at Meadowbrook Manor since February 10, 1938, and when his health faded several years ago he entered The Oaks.
He was employed by Passages Inc. for several years and while employed there was recognized for his contributions to the field of developmental disabilities.
He was probably the only non-athlete who received a letter jacket from Columbia City High School and he wore it proudly.
He was an avid fan of Columbia City athletics and was a passenger either on the fan bus or a player bus to all games.
For many years during Old Settlers, Mr. Rockey distributed Old Settler’s booklets throughout the week with a brand new carrier bag from The Post & Mail.
He was a member of First Church of God.
Surviving relatives include a brother, Leonard Rockey, Millersburg.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Melvin and Lawrence, and a sister, Mary.
The funeral service begins at 2 p.m. Saturday at Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, with Revs. Hubert E. Miller and Lynn English officiating.
Visitation is two hours before the service.
Burial is a Salem Cemetery near Wilmot.
