David and Lucinda (Jester) Linn

David Linn was born on March 29, 1822 in Ohio. It is presently
believed he was the son of Robert Linn and Elizabeth Blue,
Robert being born in New Jersey and Elizabeth a native of
Indiana.

On December 16, 1840 David Linn was married to Lucinda May
Jester (Clark) in Addison, Champaign County, Ohio.
Lucinda was born on July 23, 1821 in Tennessee to Samuel
and Jemima Jester. Samuel died shortly after Lucinda's birth
and her mother then married David Clark. Although Lucinda
was a Jester by birth, she was married under the name of
Clark which later caused her some difficulty when she tried to
make a claim for a widow's pension after David died. She was
forced to explain the discrepancy through an affidavit which
read as follows:

"The reason of difference of middle letter in my name is this:
My Father's name was Jester. He died when I was a child.
My Step-Father's name was Clark and upon my marriage to
David Linn he had it put upon record as Clark. And I do
solemnly swear that neither myself or my late husband had
ever been married prior to our marriage as is upon record and
a copy of which I sent you."

On March 8, 1864 in Etna Green, Indiana, David Linn enlisted
as a private in Captain North's Company F of the 74th Regiment
of Indiana Volunteers. He was described as follows:

"... 42 years, 5 feet 10 1/2 inches high, sandy complexion, grey
eyes, dark hair, and by profession a farmer; born in the State of
Ohio.... (January 18, 1865)"

He was honorably discharged from his service on June 7, 1865
at Madison, Indiana. During his term in service, however, he
suffered a hernia and described his injury when applying for
disability pension:

"Rupture in the pit of the stomach by falling with a log in
building breast works, near Peachtree, Georgia, on or about the
15th day of July 1864 and has not been able to perform manual
labor since that time to any amount. (November 11, 1867)"

This family did quite a bit of moving around in search of good
farm land and other labor in the lumber business. After their
marriage in Addison, Ohio, David and Lucinda are next found to
be living in Wayne Township, Montgomery County, Ohio on
September 10, 1850. Then between 1855 and 1858 they
moved to Etna Green, Indiana where they were found living on
September 10, 1860. They then moved to the Cromwell
vicinity in the late 1860's. In 1868 they were near Loon Lake,
Whitley County, Indiana and on August 27, 1870 were living at
Boydston's Mills in Tippecanoe Township. Their remaining years
were spent at their home near Cromwell in Noble County where
David Linn died on January 16, 1886 of paralysis. Lucinda died at
the home of her son, John C. Linn, in Cromwell on May 24, 1892
of dropsy and was buried beside her husband in Byer Cemetery,
just two miles east of Syracuse, Indiana.

David and Lucinda were parents of eleven known children:
