The following is a translation of page 367 from the book 'Sindelfinger Familien',
by Helmuth Maier, 1962 about the surname LEIBFRIED.
LEIBFRIED
from Germanic first name Luitfried = he who protects his people
The oldest verified home of the family is Ravensburg, here the name is
documented for the first time in 1381 with Heinz LUITFRIED who appears
as a bondsman for a new burgher moving into Ravensburg, it can be
assumed that he had already then a respected and financially secure
position in that town. A later Heinz LUITFRIED is mentioned in 1430, from
then on the name LUITFRID/LUETFRID (always spelt with u/i) regularly
appears in tax records.
Through assimilation the LEUTFRIED name slowly changes to LEIBFRIED
during the 16th century.
Ravensburg accepted the Reformation around 1545 only partially; the
LEIBFRIED family apparently retained the old religion as they are not
mentioned in the Protestant church records, which start in 1561.
The church records of the three Catholic parishes only start in 1610.
The birth of the top ancestor, Jakob LUITFRIED, which should have
occurred about 1585/1590 cannot therefore be verified. We only know
his name from the following entry dated 1683 found in the Sindelfingen
Buergerbuch:
' Hans LEIBFRIED, Bauer, ward geboren zu Voehringen .....'
