Frederick Leathers (Leder)I was born about 1691 in Switzerland (or possibly Germany). He and Anna Elizabeth emigrated to the United States in 1728, arriving on the Mortonhouse, August 23, 1728 (the same ship as Ulrich Schurch, great-grandfather of Barbara Shirk, wife of Frederick II).

On August 24, 1728, 80 Palatines with their families, about 200 persons, imported in the ship Mortonhouse, John Coufas, Master, last from Deal, whence the ship sailed June 15. The list totalled 205 persons, including 80 males above 16 years of age, 69 women and 56 children. Among the 80 males above 16 years of age were Frederick Leeder, Georg Bechtell, Uli Schurch, Martin Schaub, and Ury Schurch. This was the sixth ship to land European immigrants in Philadelphia during the period from 1727 to 1776.

Present-day descendants who have traced their ancestry to Frederick Leeder, which is the way he signed his name on the Oath of Allegiance, report they have found his name spelled several ways--Leder, Leeder, Lederer, Lether, Leather and Leathers--and sometimes more than one way on the same document. This is attributable to the phonetic spelling by the official or clerk writing the names on documents. Other variations of the Leathers name include Ledder and Leatherer. Leder in German means leather.

York county was created out of Lancaster in 1748 and became the state's fifth county.

Frederick is among the earliest settlers in Kreutz Valley and also among the earliest provisional settlers of York County (before it was established). In 1736, Frederick bought 250 acres on the west side of the Susquehanna River (some of the deeds and records show his wife as "Agnes").

He died in 1746 in Dover Twp., York Co., PA. His children were in Orphan's Court in Laster Co., PA June 6, 1749. The record lists his wife and three children.
