Joseph Gaston, Esq., of Irish descent and originally
from Western Pennsylvania, resided in Hardwick Town-
ship, Sussex County, N. J. He married Miss Linn, sister
to Judge Linn. They had two daughters, one of whom
married Dr. Elijah Everett; the other married the Rev.
John Boyd, pastor of Hardwick church. He was esteemed
a judicious, upright man; he died of bilious colic, about
the year 1803 or 4, aged about sixty-five years.

From ?Gaston Genealogy? website doddridgecountyroots.com: Occupation farmer, grist mill owner. During Revolutionary War, served as Paymaster of the NJ Militia from Somerset and Sussex Counties of NJ. He settled in Sussex Co, NJ, and had a family. He lived in the village of Huntsville where he owned a grist mill and farm that was five miles from the mill. After Joseph's death, his son-in-law, Dr. Elijah Everitt owned the mill property, and his other son-in-law, Rev. John Boyd, owned the Gaston homestead farm. From 1798-1800, Joseph was an elected member of the General Assembly of the NJ Legislature from Sussex County.

303 Margaret Linn m. Joseph Gaston, b. 1738, d. Oct 24, 1804, son of Joseph and Margaret Gaston [Gustin], who came from Ireland to Somerset County, but were of French Huguenot Descent. Joseph was an Elder in the Yellow Frame church; he was paymaster to the militia of Sussex County during the Revolutionary War, and he was the County agent to sell the confiscated estates of the Tories. As paymaster he distributed to the militia of Sussex County, including Warren, a Total of [Pound Sterling] 1500, on which the state allowed him a commission of one per cent.
