BIOGRAPHIE: John Henry Cooke was born at Jamestown, Chautauqua County, New York, and was educated in the Alden High School, Alden, Erie County, New York; Central High School, Washington D.C., Washington and Lee University, Lexington Virginia, and the University of Buffalo Law School. He began the practice of law in Alden, New York on June 30, 1937. On June 10, 1939 he married Eleanor Jean Anson of Kenmore, New York. He was elected Justice of the Peace, Town of Alden in 1937; Councilman in 1941; Supervisor in 1943; Chairman of the Erie County Board of Supervisors in 1950; elected to the N.Y.S. Senate in 1950 and served consecutively in that body until his appointment by Gov. Nelson Rockefeller to the N.Y.S. Court of Claims, March 30, 1962. On June 13, 1959, he became Erie Co. Republican Chairman and served until his resignation March 26, 1962. He was designated Presiding Judge by Gov. Rockefeller on January 20, 1973 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1978.
