Notizen zu dieser Person
The third child of Ferdinand and Ernestina was Friedrich Charles Postier
who was born on 8/15/1887 at 99 Abram St. in Cleveland. (SS#
272-10-5503). His birth certificate showed that his father was
Ferdinand, age 28, born Germany, and his mother was Irrene, age 26, born
Germany.
Fourth Reformed Church book shows a familienbuch for this family. It
states that Friedrich August Ferdinand Postier was born on 8/15/1887,
baptized on 11/6/1887, and confirmed on 3/31/1901.
The individual baptism record shows that Friedrich August Carl Postier
was born 8/15/1887 to Ferdinand Postier and Ernestine Radke, and baptized
on 11/6/1887. Baptismal sponsors were: Carl Meincke, Ferdinand Meincke,
and Amalia Kossin.
Fred first married a girl named Hattie Zornow on 6/29/1907 at Zion
Church, Rev. Theophilis Leonhardt presiding. Marriage record shows that
Fred was 20 years old, 2533 Trowbridge Ave., born Cleveland to Ferd
Postier and Ernestine Ratke. Hattie was 20 years old, 2205 View Rd.,
born Cleveland to Charles Zornow and Bertha Hauth. Fred and Hattie had a
son, David.
In 1909 in a court case, Fred is not able to be located in Cleveland,
Ohio.
1910 Census shows that Fred was living with his parents, 22 years old,
and divorced.
Fred Postier divorced Hattie on 6/26/1911, records from Cuyahoga County
Common Pleas Court. Custody of David was awarded to Hattie. Fred did
not raise David.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
This is where things become confusing. Fred Postier may have married
Susan Schilchen, possibly in Toledo, Ohio, as Fred was living there in
1919, when his mother died (from Probate records). I have looked for a
marriage certificate in Toledo, but did not find one. Perhaps they were
never married though. Susan was born on 5/11/1893 in Hungary. To
clarify where I am going here, I believe that Charles Frank Edwards and
Fred Postier were the same person and that there was never a man named
Charles Frank Edwards, first husband of Susan Schilchen, and I will
explain why as we go along.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Birth records for two boys later called Jerome Postier and Vernon Edwards
show the following:
Birth certificate states: Charles Frank Edwards was born at 915 N. Erie
Street, Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio on January 30, 1914. His father was
Charles Frank Edwards, 915 N. Erie St., age 26, born Akron, Ohio, a
motorman and Susan Myers, 915 N. Erie St., age 20, born Strausburg,
Germany. (Note: Mother's name should be Susan Schilchen, and she should
be born in Hungary.) (This is actually Jerome's birth record even though
the name is not the same.)
Death certificate shows: Jerome Postier died on February 8, 1965 at the
Veterans Administration Hospital in Brecksville, Ohio (length of stay was
163 days). His usual address was 3709 W. 44th St., Cleveland, Ohio. He
was widowed, born January 30, 1914 in Ohio, and was usually a boxmaker.
His parents were listed as Fred Postier and Susan Schultzen. He was in
WWII and his social security number was 272-10-2504. He died of lobar
pneumonia and was buried on February 11, 1965 at Riverside Cemetery,
Cleveland, Ohio. The informant was V.A. Records.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Birth certificate shows: Fred Willard Edwards was born at 523 Locust
Street, Toledo, Ohio, on March 12, 1916 to Charles Frank Edwards,
residence Toledo, Ohio, age 29, born Akron Ohio, a motorman, and Susan
Schilchen, residence Toledo, Ohio, age 23, born Germany. Number of
children born and living is 2. (Note: Susan should be listed as born in
Hungary) (This is really Vernon who died in the fire, even though the
name is not the same.)
Death certificate shows: Vernon Edwards died on October 2, 1920 at St.
Johns Hospital. He was born March 12, 1916 and was 4 years, 6 months, 20
days old, born in Toledo, Ohio to Charles Edwards born in Cleveland, Ohio
and Susan Schilchen born in Hartfield, Germany. Vernon's usual address
was 7020 Lorain Ave., Cleveland, Ohio. He died of asphyxiation suffered
by smoke of fire in room. He was buried at Brooklyn Hts. Cemetery on
October 5, 1920. The informant was Charles Edwards, 7020 Lorain Ave.
On February 27, 1925, in the Probate Court of Cuyahoga County, Ohio,
there was filed Application for Letters of Administration in the Estate
of Vernon Postier, deceased. It reads: The undersigned hereby makes
application to be appointed as administratix of the estate of Vernon
Postier, late of the city of Cleveland, in said county, deceased, and on
oath states that said Vernon Postier died on or about the 2nd day of
October, 1920, intestate, leaving no widow and the following persons,
next of kin:
Susan Postier, mother, age 32, 3709 West 44th St.
Charles Postier, father, age 37, 3709 West 44th St.
Jerome Postier, brother, age 11, 3709 West 44th St.
Applicant further states that there is not to her knowledge any last will
and testament of said decendent in existence. That the whole personal
estate of the decedent consists of an action for wrongful death, the
probably value of which will not exceed $100. The real estate of said
decedent consists of nothing. Signed by Susan Postier, 3709 W. 44th St.
The undersigned, the widow-husband and heirs at law of said Vernon
Postier hereby decline to accept the trust of administering upon his
estate, and suggest the appointment of Susan Postier as administratix.
Signed Charles Postier (NOTE: it was originally signed Frederick
Postier, but the Frederick was erased and Charles was written over it.
Susan Postier was appointed administrator and bond of $100 was given with
Jacob Schilchen (1671 Roosevelt Avenue - her father), and Charles F.
Wilke (4361 Irea Avenue).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
NOW, to explain my theory.
1. Familienregister shows him as Friedrich August Ferdinand Postier.
2. Fred was baptized Friedrich August Carl Postier.
3. Fred Postier was always known as Fred Postier and when he died he was
Fred C. Postier.
4. Jerome's death certificate lists his father as Fred Postier.
5. Vernon's death certificate lists his father as Charles Edwards born
in CLEVELAND (where Fred Postier was born), not Akron as the birth
certificates for Jerome and Vernon showed.
6. The informant on Vernon's death certificate was Charles Edwards, 7020
Lorain Ave. However, it is known that Fred and Susan went out for the
evening and left the children home alone when Vernon was killed. It is
unlikely that a Charles Frank Edwards (Susan's supposed first husband)
would be living in the same house as Fred Postier and Susan Schilchen
when Vernon was killed.
7. Estate papers for Vernon POSTIER (not Edwards), show that his father
was Charles POSTIER (not Edwards). Also, it is signed CHARLES POSTIER
(Frederick was erased and changed to Charles)!
8. In the will of Ferdinand Postier, (father of Fred), he left his
estate without restriction to his sons, John and Paul, but Fred's portion
was placed in trust with William F. Kees to manage Fred's portion. It
appears that Ferdinand did not trust Fred to handle his own portion of
Ferdinand's estate, and that Fred was not a very responsible person, as
viewed by Ferdinand. Also, if Fred were to die, his portion of
Ferdinand's estate was to go to his brothers, John and Paul, unless Fred
Postier should leave a family. This will was dated February 19, 1919,
just 12 days after Ernestine died. At this time, Fred was divorced from
Hattie Zornow and Fred's son David was still alive. Also at the time of
this will, Jerome and Vernon were already born, and in 1919, Fred was
living in Toledo. Perhaps Ferdinand did NOT know that Fred had two sons
with Susan Schilchen.
9. It is very odd that the names of Jerome and Vernon were not their
original names from their birth certificates.
10. It is also very odd that Vernon Postier is buried in the Postier
plot at Brooklyn Hts. Cemetery if Fred were not his father.
11. The 1930 census shows that Fred married at the age of 25, so that
would be 1912. Susan married at the age of 21, so that would be 1914.
So, it appears that Fred and Susan first married each other sometime
between 1912 and 1914, and that would mean that Fred was the father of
both Jerome and Vernon.
SO, in closing on this issue, it could be that there was really a Charles
Frank EDWARDS, father of Jerome and Vernon, but that seems unlikely.
Unless he was a dastardly fellow and Fred and Susan were trying to avoid
this Charles Frank Edwards and changing names of the children. But, it is
odd as stated in #6 above that Charles Frank Edwards would be living with
Fred Postier and Susan when Vernon died. However, as seen in the city
directories below, in 1914 and 1916, when Jerome and Vernon were born,
Fred Postier is shown as living at 3325 Trowbridge with his parents, so
it could be that Susan Schilchen was in Toledo, married to Charles Frank
Edwards and giving birth to Jerome and Vernon. I will leave this open to
speculation, but I have been unable to find any further information to
clarify the issue.
