Christina’s early death was difficult on her remaining family. Georg returned to his barge business, leaving his younger children with Johann Wambach, Christina’s brother. The oldest surviving son, Anton Philipp, signed on to work on ships going back and forth to America. Oldest daughter Anna went to work as a cook in a wealthy household, while her sister Margaretha went into domestic service. The youngest daughter Helena was sent by her uncle to be educated by nuns. When Anton found land to settle in Blue Island, then outside of Chicago, he invested in the pork futures in Chicago – earning enough money to send for his surviving siblings. However, Anton refused to send money for his father also to emigrate. |
