August 20, 2012 Correspondence Dear Karen, I’m very pleased that I could help you a little bit. Genealogy is always getting tricky when you’re reaching the beginning of the church records that mainly started in the 17th century in Germany. In some areas you’ll find church records that started in the 16th century. The catholic church introduced church records after the council of Trient (1545 - 1563) as a result of the reformation and the establishment of the protestant churches. Because then they need to fix to which church a person belonged, whether he/she was a member of the catholic church or of one of the protestant churches. And this was manifested mainly in two sacraments, the christening and the marriage. As the membership to a church wasn’t manifested by the death of a person church records for the deaths were often established later then the other two records for the christenings and the marriages. The church records for the deaths were at the beginning mainly run to fix the burials as the burials had to be paid. Very often you find the number of deaths at the end of a year as a control. If you want to get information about your ancestors for the time before beginning of the church records and your ancestors had been farmers you’ll have to look for the documents of the landlords of the farms by that time and that’s often very difficult. Not every archive of a noble house or former monastery is available. In the state archive of Münster you’ll find lots of private archives of former noble houses but not of all of them. So very often the fortune will help you. I haven’t done much research about the Breische farm in Pixel till now. I think the former landlord was the convent of Herzebrock or the dominion of Rheda. Documents of the former dominion of Rheda is still in the ownership of the noble family of the Princes of Bentheim-Tecklenburg. But I’m quite sure that the Breische farm must have been quite big, perhaps with the status of a “Meierhof” (full heirs) or a “Halbmeierhof” (half heirs). You can guess this when I look from what kind of farms the women came from that married on this farm and on what kind of farms sons and daughters from the Breische farm married on. Our common ancestor Henrich Breische gen. Austerwieman married the heir daughter of the Austerwieman farm (half heirs) in Bokel. His mother Catharina Nölcken (Nölke) was born on the Nölke farm (half heirs) in Batenhorst/Wiedenbrück. The Nölke farm was very important in this area. Sons and daughters of this farm married in nearly every farm of full heirs and half heirs around. Tonies (Tony/Anthony) Nölcken is an ancestor for me for five times. Two of four children of him that I know are direct ancestors of me. His son Evert is not only one of my ancestors. Four of his six children are direct ancestors of me too and Catharina Nölcken wife of Henrich Breische sen. and mother of Henrich Breische gen. Austerwieman is one of them. The mother of Henrich Breische sen. was Anna (Meier) Pavenstädt from the peasantry of the same name in the Gütersloh area. It’s a farm of full heirs. Sons and daughters of this farm were only married to the biggest farms around like Meier Ostberg or Meier zu Röckinghausen. And of course only daughters from very big farms were able to marry on the Pavenstädt farm like Meier zur Langert, Westmeier, Meierfrankenfeld. This shows a little bit how important the Breische farm must have been in the past. I don’t know how old this farm is. But I’ve read in the book about the history of the peasantries of Bokel and Druffel that the half heirs farms were established in the 13./14. century. Very often these farms were founded because a full heirs farm was divided between two sons or daughters. Sometimes you can still see this by the names of the farms and where they are located. Here are two examples: Peasantry of Bokel: Austerwiemann/Eusterwiemann/Öesterwiemann and Westerwiemann. Auster/Euster/Öester means East and Wester of course West. Wie = Wiehe = Weide means meadow. So the surname means man (=people) on the East meadow, man on the West meadow. Both farms are located side by side and when you look at them from the south to the north, Westerwiemann is in the West and Eusterwiemann of course in the East. History is saying that the original Wiemann farm (of full heirs) was divided between two daughters and in fact until the first half of the 19th century both farms still had a meadow that belonged to them both. Peasantry of Batenhorst: Meier Südhaus, Göeken-Südhaus sometimes Göddeke-Südhaus today only Göddeke. Both farms are located again side by side in the south of this peasantry. So it’s easy to see that the name Südhaus (= Southhouse) was established from the location within the peasantry. And of course we have the Westhaus farm in the west of Batenhorst and the Nordemann (= Northman) farm in the north (Not very imaginative!). But back to the both Südhaus farms. The original farm of full heirs is the Meier Südhaus (Meier as an addition to the surname that is was a farm of full heirs). Obviously there was a son called Geoffrey who got a part of the farm to establish a new farm with the status of half heirs. Why do we know that his name was Geoffrey? Göke(n) or Göddeke is the dialect form (lower German) of the first Name Gottfried and that’s Geoffrey in English! We’ve got lots of examples of the same process of a split of a farm of full heirs in two farms. The older one that kept its status as a farm of full heirs and the younger farm got the status as a farm of half heirs or even only quarter heirs often called in our area “Erbkotten”. And the distinction in East Westphalia was often made by little additions to the name, for example Große (= big) Lümern and Kleine (= little) Lümern, Öesterfellhaus and Westerfellhaus, Meier Eblinghaus and Volmer (first name) Eblinghaus. But sometimes the names of the farms changed so much that you can’t see the origin at once. The Ködinghausen farm in the peasantry of Lintel (Wiedenbrück) was divided in two steps, always between brothers. First between Hans (John) and Peter (Peitz à dialect) and then the farm of Peter between his descendant and a son called Arnold (shortened to Arnd). The oldest farm of John was of full heirs the other ones of half heirs. First the Names were written Meier Johan Ködinghausen, Meier Peter Ködinghausen and Meier Arnd Ködinghausen. Later forms were Ködinghausen sive (latin for “or”) Hansmeier, Ködinghausen sive Peitzmeier and Ködinghausen sive Arensmeier. In the middle of the 18th century it was reduced to Hansmeier, Peitzmeier, Arensmeier. The same history has the Moselage farm in Batenhorst. Divided between the brothers Conrad (= Kord) and Gerhard (= Gerd) both got the status of half heirs and the names were reduced similar to the Ködinghausen farms to Meierkord and Meiergerd. In every case you those farms are direct neighbors. Oh, I’m looking at my watch. It’s time for bed.
