John: His baptismal name, Joannes, is Latin for John. John was a tall, rawboned (big boned) man with a beard and a very stern and highly religious Catholic man. He was a winemaker and a shoemaker bytrade. He could measure a person's foot once and make the whole shoe or boot to fit perfectly. A family story says that as a young man John was conscripted into the German army by the Kiser in the1850's. He didn't want to join the military so he escaped into France in a hay wagon. He then worked his way to the United States on a cattle ship in 1861 and settled in St Louis, Missouri. John met his wife Margaretta in St. Louis where they married. The 1870 Missouri Census shows John, Magie, and daughter Kate, age 1 year living in Ward 2 of St. Louis. John was working as a shoemaker. Bothhe and Magie were said to be born in Bavaria. In 1880 John and Margaretta were living with their two daughters, Emilie age 9, and Anna age 1, at 1815 Jackson Street in Ward 5. John had his shoe shop at 2005 Columbus Street. That same year he became an American citizen. Twenty years later, the family was renting a place at 1818 S. 3rd Street in Ward 7. John was still making shoes. Daughter Emilie was married. The three other children were living with their parents. Annie and Tillie were seamstresses. Son John was a shoe cutter. By 1910, John, Margaretta, and son John were living at 1947 Utah Street. Both Johns were working in the shoe factory. The father was a shoe maker and the son, a shoe cutter. The 1920 Missouri Census has John living with his daughter, Anna Lammert and her family at 6301 Grand Avenue in Ward 12.
