Das Wappen ist von den Grafen von Hoya. Das Wappen wurde zum ersten Mal von den Herren von Stumpfenhausen benutzt, welche sich im fruehen 13. Jahrhundert anfingen sich Grafen von Hoya zu nennen. DieFamilie starb 1582 aus und das Gebiet wurde von den Herzögen von Braunschweig-Lüneburg geerbt.
Die Herkunft der Bärenkrallen ist unbekannt. Heute ist das Wappen der von Stumpfenhausen noch im Wappen von Hoya vorhanden.
