Voer als "luijtenant onder capiteyn Jacop Duym op 's lands oorlogschip 'de vergulde Son(ne)' dat bij het uitvaren van Goedereede op 21 juni 1652 schipbreuk leed. Hij was enige overlevende en kwam met een stuk hout aan wal gespoeld. Zijn vader, kapitein op een van 's lands oorlogschepen, was hier zo blij en dankbaar over dat hij zich noemde naar dit vergane schip.
