Epp, author and teacher: b. 13 August 1888 in Petershagen,Molotschna Colony, South Russia, the fifth of seven children ofGerhard Epp (1848-1916) and Elisabeth (Fast) Epp. He was marriedtwice. His first wife was Helene Matthies (d. 1924), whom he marriedin 1912 in Altonau, Molotschna Colony, South Russia; they had twosons, Arnold and Constantine. On 6 June 1926 he married Justina Dueck(b. 4 November 1885, Muntau, Molotschna Colony – d. 4 February 1955,Ontario), daughter of Johann Dueck (1856-1922) and Justina(Giesbrecht) Dueck (1857-1892); they had one son, Harry. Peter d. 9January 1954 and was buried in Union cemetery, Columbus. Epp was educated at the Teachers' Institute at Halbstadt, Russia, thePredigerschule (1906-1908) at Basel, Switzerland, the University ofHeidelberg (1908 ff.), Germany, and received his Ph.D. at theUniversity of Basel (1912). After this he taught at the BarvenkovoSchool of Commerce, Russia (1912-1918), and the Teachers' Institute atHalbstadt, Russia (1918-1924). In 1924 Peter immigrated to the United States; he lived at Bluffton,Ohio, serving on the faculty of Bluffton College until 1934. In thatyear he joined the faculty of the Ohio State University at Columbus,Ohio, teaching German and Russian. In 1946 he became ill withtuberculosis, after which he never completely regained his health,though he taught some courses. Peter Epp was an outstanding Mennonite author. His published worksincluded Die Erlösung, Eine Mutter, Johanna, and Das Geisslein. Hiswife prepared his largest work, "An der Molotschna," a manuscript, onwhich he made some entries four days before his death, forpublication. Other manuscripts, "Eros Multiformis" and "De Homine,"were accepted by the University of Basel for safekeeping until theyear 2000. Bibliography Warkentin, Abraham and Melvin Gingerich.
