He first lived on Benezet Street, in the Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia. He grew up on Curwen Road, in Rosemeont, Pa. Spent some summers at Camp Mashpee in New Hampshire, where he learned to sail, and later taught other boys how to do so. Collected stamps. Bicycledthrough Switzerland, Austria and Czechoslovakia in the Summer of 1938 as partof a Youth Hostel program. Attended Episcopal Academy- Class of 1939. Showed interest in dramaand track. Loved jazz. Played the piano well. Went off to WilliamsCollege, Class of 1943. Joined Chi Psi. Majored in English, not Chemistry. He wanted no part of the notion that he would join his father's business, which caused a breach between them for some time. After WWII began, he joined the Navy and entered the V-12 program. He graduated early, in 1942, with others in his class who were in the military, and was sentto Columbia University for training. Engaged to an old neighborhoodfriend, he married Isabel in June 1943. Had jaundice at the time. Received a commission as a lieutenant j.g. The couple honeymooned in Nag's Head, NC and then his bride joined himin New Orleans for awhile, one of several different locations where Berthad orders, before he shipped off to war. She returned to Rosemont, discovering that she was pregnant. Bert was sent to England where he served in the North Atlantic as thegun commander on a sub chaser. He took part in the ill-fated OperationTiger in the English Channel, a large joint training exercise with theBritish naval forces, which was attacked by Nazi submarines and surface craft, which was thrown into horrific confusion. At one point, his hat was blown off and as he stooped down to grab it a shell whizzed just overhead. One evening, in April 1944, another U.S. ship came along his and, by means of signal lights, informed him that he was now thefather of a baby boy, named John. Bert also took part in Operation Overlord, the D-Day invasion. He was in charge of an LST (Landing Ship Tank) and actually landed in Normandy on Day 2. Bert was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. He later received the Purple Heart when, one time on night patrol, someone had left a hatch open and he fell through it threedecks, busting several ribs. That landed him in a Portsmouth hospital. Bertcame home on the Queen Mary in July, 1945, for 30 day leave before he wasto report to the Pacific. However, the announcement of V-J Day in August meant he was home for good. His first job was selling shirts at Wanamaker's for $22 a week. Hespoke and wrote well, and soon got a job with the John Arndt Company, in Philadelphia, an advertising agency, where he wrote copy for shirtsand other things. He rose through the ranks. Eventually, he became Vice President and General Account Manager for Arndt, Preston, Chapin, Lamb& Keene (APCL&K). Some of his biggest accounts included the Drexel Furniture Co., and Philadelphia National Bank. Every year he wouldtravel to the furniture shows in Chicago and in North Carolina. Golf was his passion on weekends. Serious marital discord developed and, afterseveral separations, he divorced Isabel in 1969. Business was riding high for years, and business was everything to Bert. But the agency went out of business as the result of the recession of 1972-73. Bert's pension, which consisted of 26,000 shares of Arndt stock, became worthless. This reversal of fortune accelerated a sad decline in his personal life. He drank a lot and became agitated about money. The other things he tried his hand at, such as the greeting card business and selling motion detector alarms, did not succeed. His second marriage also failed, in 1975. In his last years, he suffered through bouts of mental and physical illness.
