She also wrote for the online magazine Salon,Entertainment Weekly, The Washington Post and other publications. In a recent essay, "Empathy," published in a magazine about dogscalled the Bark, Ms. Dougherty humorously described her relationshipwith Mollie, a black Labrador and greyhound mix, during her illness. When Ms. Dougherty was undergoing chemotherapy, Mollie experiencednausea and other side effects as a sympathetic reaction. "Mollie's gastric hurricanes quickly became a regular part of mycancer experience -- inexplicable to all, but as regular asclockwork," she wrote. "I would go in for chemotherapy and sometime inthe next 24 hours, Mollie would toss her cookies. "The panicky early-morning calls to my heroic dog walker becameroutine. 'Are you nearby? You are? Good. I think she's about to hurl.'" Ms. Dougherty was a disciplined writer who continued to work despiteher deteriorating health. She conducted her author interviews bytelephone after immersing herself in the works of her subjects. In her 1996 obituary for the Miami Herald of Audrey Meadows, whoplayed the wife of Jackie Gleason's Ralph Kramden on "TheHoneymooners," Ms. Dougherty wrote: "As mistress of the Kramdens'cold-water flat, Meadows ruled because she was the one with the goodhead on her shoulders. . . . It was Alice who controlled the chaoticgoings-on in their lives. She provided order amid her husband'sanarchy." Ms. Dougherty was born in Washington, grew up in Annandale andgraduated from Annandale High School. She was a graduate of theCollege of William and Mary and received a master's degree in Englishfrom Boston University in 1982. She stayed in Boston for the next 13 years as an art critic andfeature writer for the Boston Phoenix before moving to Miami, whereshe was the Herald's television critic from 1995 to 1997. She assailedthe mindless hype of local television news shows and directionlessawards shows and covered the development of the "V-chip," whichprevents violent programs from being seen by children. After freelancing for several publications, she joined the weeklyMiami New Times from 1998 to 2000 as its theater critic. In herpointed farewell column, she wrote: "If young people are exposed onlyto warmed-over David Mamet, obscure Tennessee Williams, and overhypedBroadway shows, why should they be enthusiastic about other, moreexciting forms of theater? How would they even know these thingsexist?" Ms. Dougherty had a wide circle of friends and tried to live as full alife as possible, in spite of her illness. One of her final projects, not yet published, was an interview with cultural critic Susan Sontag, who died in December, in which they both discussed their battles withcancer. Survivors include her mother, Carolyn Forch of Springfield; twosisters, Patricia Dougherty of Charlottesville and Lynn Dougherty ofTopanga, Calif.; and her companion, Harvey Simon of Washington.
