There is some false information spreading out on the internet aboutGeorge's ancestry. One of the main mistakes is that he is reported asone of the Mayflower passengers who was among the first settlers inNew Plymouth and lost his wife in the first harsh winter of 1621. These information are based on an 1894 publication by Edson I. Carrnamed The Carr Family Records. Carr cites an old family bible thatrecords the events of George and his brothers coming to Massachusetts. These information are clearly fabricated. No bearer of the name Carrwas ever on board of the famous Mayflower (see also: False and fakedMayflower Genealogy at http://members.aol.com/calebj/hoaxes.html). Also, there is a lot unverified information regarding his furtherancestry. There is no evidence at all that George Carr is or was inany ways a decendant of the Barons of Ferniehirst. It seems to beclear that Robert was the brother of Benjamin, William and James Carrand therefore an uncle of Caleb Carr, who was governor of RhodeIsland. Beyond this line, any proff is lacking. British sources seemto show that the suggested ancestor - the 10th beron of Ferniehirst -did not have any children that could be identical with the Carrs thatmigrated to America. In contracdiction to these fabricated information are the facts: George Carr appears first in 1633 in Ipswich and moved from there withthe first settlers to Salisbury. The family tradition that Edson Carrgives shows him as a carpenter which seems to be correct. He wasworking as a shipwright. Regardless of the Mayflower story, there is some information aboutGeorge Carr in Edson Carr's book: Page 12: GEORGE CARR was born in London Eng. about 1599. He married LucindaDavenport and came to America in 1620, on the Mayflower, as a shipocarpenter, bringing his young wife with him. He located with thepilgrims at Plymouth, and his wife was one of the unfortunateforty-one who died the following winter and early spring. A few yearslater he settled in Ipswich, and from there removed with with thefirst settler of Cloechester (Salisbury) Mass. He was granted anisland in the Merrimac river for a home and the purposes of ashipyard, and it was called Carr's island. The action of the town inrelation to the grant of the island was as follows: "At a generalmeeting of the freemen of gthe town of Colechester, the 3rd day of the5th month, 1640, it was ordered yt George Carr shall have the islandwhere he now dwells, as well as the marsh and upland, it being thegreatest island within the town limits, in the Merrimack river, to himand to his heirs and assigns forever." Oct. 7, 1640, it was ordered bythe General Court that "Colechester is hinceforth to be calledSalisbury." The island was the home of the Carrs for a number of generations, andthe possession of this island gave the family the monopoly of theferrying business across the river in ye olden times. This ferry atGeorge Carr's death was considered to be worth 400 pounds. Two of thefamily were drowned while attending the ferry. The large house onCarr's island was destroyed by fire, May 9, 1797. George Carr died inSalisbury, April 4, 1682, and his second wife Elizabeth, died in thesame place, May 6 1691. Their children, all born in Salisbury, were, 7X 1. Elizabeth Carr, b. April 21, 1642. 8X 2. George Carr, b. April 15, 1644. 9 3. Richard Carr, b. March 16, 1646, d. April 25, 1649. 10X 4. William Carr, b. March 15, 1648. 11X 5. Jame Carr, b. April 28, 1650 12X 6.
