Year of birth comes from Old Bible Records. Haverhill vital recordsindicate that James was approximately 96 when he died, which wouldsuggest a 1582, rather than 1590 birth date. James became a freeman inNewbury March 4, 1635. From the History of Oyster River: In 1640 he,with eleven others cleared the forest at the Indian village ofPentucket and founded the present city of Haverhill, Ma. He lived atthe Easterly end of the town, near Rocks Bridge. He was a prominantman, serving as Selectman in 1646 and Representative to the GeneralCourt. He was a Puritan and once accused John Gordrey of witchcraft. One of first settlers of Haverhill having removed there from Newburyab. 1640; one of the first selectman 1646, freeman 1634/5 James Davis, Sen., and his son Ephraim, signed a paper presented tothe Ipswich Court, Feb. 1658/9 against John Godfrey, accusing him ofwitchcraft. The Davis family of Marlborough, Wiltshire, England, came originallyfrom Wales and derive their name from David, the patron saint ofWales. Robert Davy is found in Wiltshire as early as 1276 in theInquisitiones post mortem. Hugh Davyse was living in Marlborough in1524, as shown by court records, also John Davyse in 1532, and thename became wide-spread in Wiltshire about that time. The Davises of Marlborough appear to have borne arms as follows,"Gules, a stag trippant or," that is, a golden stag on a red shield,as shown by the will of Joane (Hayles) Davis, widow of Robert ofMarlborough, son of Paul, born about I560, which appears upon itsseal. This was the coat of arms of an ancient Welsh tribe. The samecoat of arms was used by William Davis of Boston, born about 1615,without doubt son of Anthony and Elizabeth (Henley) Davis ofBrinkworth, near Marlborough. James Davis, the emigtant, was born, according to old Bible records,in Marlborough, England, about the year 1584. He was made freeman atNewbury, Mass., 4 March 1634/5. He was a prominent man, serving as selectman andrepresentative to the General Court. He was a Puritan and once accusedJohn Godfrey of witchcraft. His wile, Cicely, was born in Marlborough,England, and died in Haverhill, Mass., 28 May I673. "We are informed by Mr. James Davis, that his father, Amos Davis, of the East Parish, owned two negroes named Prince and Judith, whom he purchased when young, in Newburyport. The bill of sale of them isstill preserved in the family. Prince married a white woman, and, aftersecuring his freedom, removed to Sanbornton, N. H., where he has descendantsare still living. Judith remained in the family until her death."
