It is not sure that Humphrey Gayer is the father of William Gayer. From: http://home.earthlink.net/~kmcgee03/dtadsgyr.html#DorcasG Since the posting of this page, I've had an e-mail from Gene KuechGene says the following: "Hello, cousin many times over (as are most Nantucket descendants - Iwas a Swain before marriage). I note you list the popularly disseminated English line for WilliamGayer of Nantucket. Are you aware of: Gayre's Book, being AHistory of the Family of Gayre by Lieut.-Colonel Robert Gayre and R.L.Gair (Edinburgh & London: Oliver and Boyd, 1959)? Both authors have impressive credentials, and their research showsthat the line of Humphry Gayre ended in co-heiresses; he had no sonWilliam, nor did any of his brothers. In reference to William Gayer of Nantucket and his brother, Sir JohnGayer of India, they say: '... until further research can be donewhich might yield more exact information, we cannot be more precise asto their exact ancestry, although there can be no doubt that they aremembers of the family.' " When I asked if I could quote the material in the e-mail, Genefollowed with this: "Of course you may include this information on the page. I found thebook, I believe, at the Newberry Library in Chicago. . . . Iphotocopied only those few pages that pertained to their conclusionsabout Humphry's children and to William and Sir John, including theirwills, and it was most convincing. But I do not find any indicationthat any others of William's descendants in this country have everseen this book!" Also: http://genforum.genealogy.com/gayer/messages/8.html Thanks, Ben, I will write that I have found scant evidence thatHumphrey and Jane (Spark) Gayer were the parents of William Gayer, whomarried Dorcas Starbuck. I will write that William C. Folger, in his1877 article in Vol. XXXI of New-England Historical and GenealogicalRegister pp. 297-301, admits that William Gayer was an Esquire fromco. Devon, England; and, that his mother was Jane, with her children:William above, Jane, Joan, Sir John and unknown father of Elizabeth. As far as I can tell, the supposed father of William Gayer, Humphrey, did not leave a will, nor did William's mother, Jane. I have nevercome across them, if they exist; however, I found the abstract of SirJohn Gayer's will, and he mentions his brother William Gayer ofNantucket Island, MA. I read an acticle, it must have been in a latervolume of NEHGR and an author quoted a researcher who published anarticle in a Pennsylvania Archive volume that I did NOT have accessto, and the connection between William Gayer and his "father" Humphreywas disproved laughingly. Thanks for the information; however, I cameacross a volume in the Dept. of Family History at Wichita PublicLibrary, and the authors, Jessie Gordon Flack and Maybelle GordonCarman confirm that William Gayer was the son of Humphrey and Jane(Spark) Gayer. They were members of all kinds of family historysocieties, including Magna Charta Dames, through the Gayer line. Idon't know what to believe, and Thanks for the Nantucket web site. There are several family publications/manuscripts concerning theGayer/Starbuck families. Duane L. Jones In addition: http://genforum.genealogy.com/gayer/messages/41.html I can't say for sure that Humphrey Gayer was the father of WilliamGayer, however the following letter may help settle things.
