Joseph HAND, son of John of East Hampton, Long Island, settled in theeastern part of the town of Guilford after 1660, and married Jane,daughter of Benjamin Wright, in 1664. She died December, 1724. He diedJanuary, 1724. He had four brothers : Shamgar, who settled in CapeMay. N. J.; Benjamin and John, Stephen of East Hampton. Joseph Handseems to have been regarded as one of the substantial men of the town,and served on committees to run boundaries and lay out allotments ofland to planters. He headed a petition to the General Court, in 1697,that East Guilford might be made a separate ecclesiastical parish. In1720, he was sent to the General Court as a representative. On Oct.27, 1671, Benjamin Wright gave his land at Hammonassett in the eastend of Guilford to Joseph Hand and wife for life, and afterwards totheir children, and on Dec. 12, 1671, Joseph Hand bought from RichardHubball all his land in the same quarter.
