The is some confusion about Madison James' birth date. All censuses inwhich he appears give a different date. In this case, the informationfrom the 1900 census are considered most reliable since they do notonly give an age but a birth month and year. It appears that Madison is identical with the A. James who is listedin de Kalb County, Alabama, with a daughter Mary I. and a wife namedSarah. The first initial A. in this record, therefore, needs to beconsidered as a mistake. It needs to be reconsidered whether James M. James from de Kalb Countyand his first wife Dillany are Madison's parents. This assumption isfavored by the fact that both of them are born in Tennessee andbetween their children there is a gap that would make Madison with hisassumed birthdate of 1837 fit in between. However, the 1840 census only names two sons among James M. James'children. These are well known as John and William James. Nonetheless,there may a family connection between these Jameses and Madison James.
