They had a daughter Elizabeth, b 20 Aug 1816, then moved to Logan County. There they had a second daughter Sabilla b10 Dec 1819. Asenath died soon after, and her parents came fromBelmont County to get the two little girls. Samuel was able to visit them about a year later. In 1824, littleSabilla wanted something up high and climbed onto the back of a chair.She tumbled into a tub of hot water, and died of the burns. This leftElizabeth without her sister, and she never saw her father again. Hehad married again in the meantime (license 12 Feb 1822, Logan County,Ohio) to Rebecca Dickinson, and had a new family to raise. Elizabeth grew up and married Thomas K Smith in 1834. They moved toMorgan County, Ohio, where they raised their family. Their son Stephenwas my great great grandfather. In July 2000, about 85 of the living descendants of Stephen and Elizabeth (Roberts) Smithattended our biennial reunion. Our family has never learned anything about Samuel's second family. In a visit to Logan County, I learned that after Samuel's death,Rebecca married John Sloan on 5 Sep 1839. In the 1850 census, a GeorgeStarbuck, age 17, appears in the household of John and Rebecca Sloan.I suppose this must be one of Rebecca's children by Samuel. On 17 Jul 1829, his case against IsaacClemans is recorded, "on appeal from the docket of Justice Scott."Judgement on that case was handed down a year later, with Starbuck torecover from Clemans "the sum of one dollar and eighty seven and onehalf cents for his damages together with the costs..." In a case beginning on 10 Apr 1830, Samuel Starbuck had his turn asdefendant, with Isaac "Dickason" (also spelled Dickisan, Dickinson,and Dickison in later sessions of the same case) as the plaintiff. On21 Oct 1831, the judge found for Dickinson in the amount of $223.96plus costs. On 19 Sep 1831 we find in this same case "It appearing to the courtfrom the return of the Sheriff that the cause heretofor levied on thiscase by the Sheriff of thie county has been twice offered to saleaccording to the law regulating the sale of land on execution and thatthe same is not sold forward of bid day. It is therefore ofdered onmotion of Isaac Hamilton attorney for plaintiff that a newappraismanet be had of said land according to law." It seems Samuelmanaged to hold off the sale of the land and pay the debt, for on 24 Apr 1832, it is recorded "Onmotion of plaintiff by Isaac Hamilton Esq his attorney it is orderedthat the levy in the case heretofore made on defendantss land be setaside at defendants costs." On the previous day, Samuel Starbuck and Thomas Dickinson wereconfirmed as executors of the will of Joseph Dickinson, Sr.
