Dr Charles Carl August Peter died of diabetis after an illnessofalmostoneyear at the age of 64 years and 6 months. He attendedtheUniversityofHeildburg and graduated with a M.D. degree prior to theageof 21 inthespring of 1831. He emigrated to America in the fall of1831.

By age 12, Carl hadpassed all the gradesofthepublic schools in Cassel and was sent to thegymnasium(college)toprepare him for the study of medicine. At age 16,heenteredtheUniversity of Marburg, then a year later atWurzburgUniversity, thentoErlangen, where he graduated with high honorsat age21. In 1838, Dr Peters came to Pitssburgh, PA where he met hisyounger brothers, Franz and Hugo, who had come to America the yearbefore. Making his way to OH from Pittsburgh, Dr Carl Peterslocatedhispracticeat Louisville in Stark County. Being dissatisfiedthere,hecontinued onthrough Indiana and Illinois, where in fall 1839, hehadanobstinateattack of malaria. He concluded then to locate atEvansvilleIN,where heformed a partnership with another physician, butnotagreeingwith hispartner's midnight gambling and sprees, Carl returnedtoOH,where in thespring of 1840, he landed in Winesburg, with elevencentsinhis pocket.Being satisfied there was no malaria in this partofthecountry, hedecided to make it his home.'
