Robert and Richard Woodward were thought to be brothers.Theywereprobablyborn in Acton Parish, Cheshire, England, and wereprobablysonsof EdwardWoodward. (See map of England for location.)Theyarebelieved to haveimmigrated to America with sisterandbrother-in-lawThomas and ElizabethWoodward Eavenson. The principalpointof confusionin the Robert andRichard Woodward families is thatbothRobert andRichard had sons namedRichard, who were both bornabout1673.Fortunately, the two families livedin slightly differentareasofChester County which helps sort them out.Robert and hissonsoriginallylived on Crum Creek in Providence Township, while Richardandhis sonslived on Chester Creek in Thornbury Township.Later Richard, sonofRobert, lived in East Bradford and Richard, son ofRichard, livedinWestBradford (see Chester County maps).

J. Gary Woodward, in The Woodward Family ofChesterCounty,Pennsylvania, gives us the names of children of RobertWoodward assonRichard anddaughter Ann. He also considers anotherdaughter Hannah, whowas buried25 November 1686 in Acton Parish and was adaughterof'RobertiWoodward,' although it is not certain it is thisRobertWoodward.Landrecords of Chester County, Pennsylvania, give us twomorenames. On8March 1696 Robert Woodward granted to John Powell land onCrumCreek.Thedeed is witnessed by Thomas Woodward. Another deed onJune11,1696,mentions land on Crum Creek bounded by George Woodward.ItappearsthatThomas and George Woodward were sons ofRobertWoodward.Robert'soccupation is given as yeoman in his deed. We donotknow thename ofRobert's wife. She did not sign the deeds, but atthatvery earlydateit was not necessarily customary for the wife to sign.Shemay havebeendeceased. Robert's son Richard is well documented inQuakerrecordsandin Nayle wills in Chester County.

George Woodward owned land on Crum Creek inProvidenceTownship,ChesterCounty.

Thomas Woodward witnessed deed when Robert Woodward sold landonCrumCreekin Providence Township, Chester County.

Another deed on 20 March 1711 tells us that Nathaniel Ring sold150acresofland to Richard Woodward late of Thornbury, yeoman, sonofRobertWoodwardof Birmingham, Tailor. Henry and Deborah Naylewerewitnesses tothis deed(father and mother-in-law of Richard). Thistellsus that thisRichard alsolived in Thornbury at some period in time.

We have no further information on either George orThomasWoodward.Anotherindication that Thomas was a son of Robert isthatRichard nameda sonThomas, apparently for this brother.

There is a Web Site, Woodward-Mattson Family, containinginformationonadescendant of Robert Woodward's son Richard, andaconciseWoodwardFamily History.
