The arms of Deacon of Hemel Hempstead were, Achevrontreillisse'betwenthree roses. Crest: a demi eagle. This familyhas beenofconsiderablenote in Hertfordshire, deriving descent fromRichardDeaconof Wyndruge,Hertfordshire, who died 1496, and whose threesons wereinthe service ofthe Crown, the elder as Secretary to ElizabethofYork,consort to HenryVII, and the other two in the militaryservice.Theiruncle Michael wasBishop of St. Asaph.

In 1658 (25 Nov), Zaccheus Gould of Topsfield deputed 'JohnPutnamofSalem,the younger, his cousin' to be his attorney.(EssexCourtRecords, IV, 100.)In an account book of John Gould,grandsonofZaccheus, born 1662, died1724, is found an entry by himasfollows,'Grandfather Gould lived inBuckinghamshire, andGrandfatherDeacon inHertfordshire, in Hempstead townin Corner Hall.' Inthis samebook arereferences to John Putnam, acontemporary, alluded toas'cousin.' JeremyGould, a brother of Zacheus,had wife (PriscillaGroverand was living inASton Abbotts in 1631, but wasin Rhode Island in1638.Another brotherof Zacheus Gould was John, wholived in Bovington,and hada daughterPriscilla (who married a Grover andhad in turn adaughternamed afterher,) and also a neice Pricilla Ware.Neither ofthese wereof suitableage to have married with John Putnam.(SeeWalter'sGleanings, page1019.) Both John Putnam and Zacheus Gouldnameddaughters'Phoebe.'Cousin was the term in use in the early part ofthe17th centurytoindicate nephew, and as there appears no opportunityforaPutnam-Gouldmarriage either way, the only alternative is toadoptthesuggestion thatJohn Putnam and Zaccheus Gould had marriedsisters.(Seepage 46,Geneological Bulletin for 1903.)

According to Professor Gould, Phebe, wife of Zaccheus Gould,wasadaughterof Thomas and Martha Deacon of Corner Hall. ThomasDeaconissaid to havebeen born about 1585.* Thomas Deacon of Corner Hallwasthefather ofThomas, born in 1609, who was B.A. Oxford,1627,andgrandfather of Lt.Col. Thomas Deacon, the Parliamentary soldier.Itisprobable that theThomas Deacon of Corner Hall, calledgrandfatherbyJohn Gould, was bornsome years prior to 1585. Bovington thehome oftheGoulds and of theDeacons is part of Hempstead, and is buteightmilesfrom Tring. It is aninteresting coincidence that RichardDeacon,theQueen's secretary,purchased the two chief manors in Stewkley,BarnsandLittlecote, in 1503,which in 1521 he gave by will to his sonRichardwhowas of MarstonMorteyn, Beds., and died 1543.

• Through the courtesy of Mr. Edward Deacon who has publishedinaworkentitled 'The Descent of the Family of Deacon of ElstoweandLondon,'anextensive collection made by him regarding the Deacons,thewillofThomas Deacon of Bovington, Hertfordshire, yeoman, hasbeenexamined.Thetestator directs that his body be buried in thechurchyardatBovington,and makes a small bequest to the poor. He nameshisthreedaughters,Awdry, Margaret, and Marie, and his sons Roger andThomasbothof whomwere minors. To son-in-law John Ewer's children,William andAnn,andafter legacies to William Parret, Francis Axtell, JohnFeilderandHenryStyle, resides to wife Joan, who with her brother RichardAllenaremadeexecutors. Henry Mayne and John Gould to beoverseers.Witnesses,ThomasHallam, Raphe Bullock, John Deacon, ThomasFielde andothers.Dated 1June, 1582, proved, Arch. Hauts. 20 June, 1582.
